Professor Slughorn looked around the Great Hall. It was a rare thing, to see it this empty, but that would be changing soon enough. Tomorrow, the Hogwarts Express would arrive, bringing the students back to the seat of learning.

Trevelyan was preceeded down the long corridor to the Great Hall by the sharp tap of his cane against the castle flagstones. Entering the Great Hall, he gave Slughorn a curt nod. "Good afternoon, Slughorn." His voice travelled well in the cavernous room.
Although his limp was ovious, it did not seem to detract from his ability to stride with purpose, as he made his way over to a chair. Taking a seat, he glanced unnecessarily around the room. "It would appear that I am the first to arrive."

"Ah, Aurelius! Good to see you back. I trust you had a good Summer?"

He offered the other man some wine

"Would you care for a drop? It's an excellent little Shiraz from South Africa; Jacob Mueller, a friend of mine, owns a vineyard out there"

"I will have a drop, thank you." He nodded his assent, and spoke in a dry tone. "Anything to ease one back into a new term, hmm?" He smiled thinly. "My summer was most productive, thank you for enquiring. Spent most of it in Polynesia studying tribal fetishes. I am certain that you too enjoyed yourself?"

Slughorn conjured up another goblet, and poured a healthy measure for his companion.

"Oh, quite" he replied "I got an invitation to go on a Transatlantic cruise. Old-style sea-crossings on a a rebuilt Muggle steam-ship. Spectacularly luxurious, and a damn sight comfier than a broom, too."

Harry appeared from nowhere holding an old prayer book. His robes were hanging off one arm and his glasses were askew on his nose.

'Oh, I'm glad I'm not late. I've just spent the last half an hour trying to change Albus' hair back to it's right colour. James put some kind of powder in his brother's soup. I've got a sneaking suspicion that his uncle had something to do with it.'

At this a familiar laugh could be heard echoing around the Great Hall.

'Anyway, had me and Ginny stumped, but we sorted it out finally.' Harry moved across to a spare seat. 'I'll mention the stuff to Neville when he gets here so he can watch out for it.'

Harry let out a sigh as he opened his leather briefcase. 'So gentlemen, had good summers, both of you?'

"Ah, the trials of parenthood." Aurelius gave a short, deep chuckle. "But yes, a most agreeable Summer thank you, Potter. Yourself?"

"Ah! Harry! Good to see you again" boomed Horace "Come, take a seat, have some wine"

He gestured to a seat.

"My summer was excellent; transatlantic cruise on a luxury-refitted Muggle steam ship. How was yours? Busy looking after the young ones, I'd wager..."

'Glad to hear it. And yes my summer did mainly revolve around the children, not that I'd have it any other way.' Harry leant over and poured himself a glass of wine.

'I'm looking forward to the new term though.' Out of the briefcase he pulled the list of new students. Briefly looking it up and down he said, 'What are the odds on Marcus getting the Malfoy double then?'

Bill hurried in, tucking his wand away into his sleeve pocket. He wiped the sweat off his forehead, and took a couple of deep breaths.

"Sorry about the late arrival," he said, pulling out a chair, "am I the last of the stragglers? I was testing a new locking charm in my office and forget I actually had to get out of the bloody place. Is there Firewhisky? I make a point of following stressful magical crises with strong liquor, better than chocolate if you ask me. Harry! What have you been up to?"

"Hmm, I wonder if I ought to pass that advice on to my students..." Aurelius tapped his chin thoughtfully, his face inscrutable as he poured himself a small cup of thick turkish coffee from an elaborate pot.

Bill chuckled. "Well, Harry's the Defense Against the Dark Arts man, I suppose the medicinal qualities of liquor are his purview. Although, from the sounds some of the Gryffindor common room parties, I suspect some of our more enterprising students have already made that particular discovery." He grinned. "Kids, eh?"

"Really?" Aurelius sipped his coffee, and turned his gaze to Neville. "Quite the handful are they, Longbottom?"
