Michael is a Muggleborn, and was brought up in Ramsgate, Kent. He has one brother Nathan who is three years younger than him. Other than anything related to magic, he had a fairly average upbringing. He did fairly well in Primary school as a decent all-rounder, and had a few friends. He wasn't naturally extremely intelligent, but was very competitive and obsessed with coming first, so his teachers thought he was much cleverer than he actually was. Sports was the only thing he couldn't be bothered to succeed in, though he did occasionally play five-a-side football for fun with friends when out of school. He was considered the ring-leader of his little group of friends.

He was seven when he first noticed that he had magical abilities. It happened when he was walking home from school by himself (something that he wasn't strictly allowed to do, but his mum was late in picking him up). He was crossing a road when a car came from around the corner. Instead of running out of the way, which probably wouldn't have helped given the speed of the car, his legs froze and he squeezed his eyes shut, dreading the impact. A few seconds passed with nothing happening, and he opened his eyes to realise that he was now standing on the pavement and the car was speeding away without the driver having noticed anything. He kept this to himself, thinking that no one would believe him. He found it hard enough to believe himself, and would have forgotten it if he didn't keep having little reminders of his special abilities pop up from time to time. He tried to take control of his magic, but had little success, and he could only do it in secret because he didn't want anyone else to know about it. There were a few times when he was really tempted to show it off to his friends, but the idea of failing and being teased about it put him off.

In Year 6 Michael passed the 11-Plus and got a place at a local Grammar School, much to the pride of his parents, who had both done rather badly at school themselves. He hadn't deliberately used any magic in the past few months before his eleventh birthday, so he was amazed when Professor Flitwick turned up and informed him and his parents that he was accepted at Hogwarts, a school for witches and wizards. At first his parents refused to let him go, but they were eventually persuaded otherwise.
