less of a theory, more of a question - do you have a theory?

It never does say how Percy came to have Scabbers, does it?  (I'm re-reading POA, and for some reason, that question just occured to me.  Sad.)  That's kind of odd, don't you think?  Why on earth would Wormtail/Scabbers want to be with the Weasley family?  He couldn't have predicted that Ron and Harry would end up best friends.  Maybe he wanted to ( Read more... )

Were the Weasley's even in the Order then? I always thought Wormtail just wanted to stay with a wizarding family, and randomly picked the Weasley's.

He wanted to be somewhere where he would regularly hear what was going on in the wizarding world, so he could tell if Voldemort or the Death Eater's were on the move again. A wizarding family would be the only choice for him in that case and from what we've read of the wizarding families, the Weasleys do seem to be the nicest.

maybe he knew the weasleys would go at it like rabbits.. and be passed down thru all the kids. it would be a much longer stay at hogwarts, easier to spy on dumbledore?

or he has a thing for redheads.

Well I believe it was mentioned in the third book that he was more afraid of the Death Eaters who had gone free because Voldemort had gone to the Potters that night on his information and met his downfall. It was also mentioned I think that he wanted to be with a wizarding family so that he could keep an ear out for any news. So where would he be LEAST likely to stumble upon a Death Eater? The Weasleys. As Sirius says, "If there ever was a family of blood traitors, it's the Weasleys."

I'm not sure that the Weasleys were in the order the first time around - Harry certainly doesn't remark on them being in the photo. On the other hand, Molly's (presumably older) brothers were, and were killed fighting the Death Eaters. Perhaps they just seemed like the best bet among wizarding families he knew of: hospitable, generous, tolerant of noise and mess (see the twins).
