I've been in offices that supplied the knee chairs and the ball chairs, but I don't know anyone who used them fulltime (that is, sitting for most of the workday). They function better as backups or for short-term use.
Thank you! That is exactly the sort of info I was looking for. Might be nice for shorter term but as an office chair, not so much. I was hoping to go for a minimalist look but I guess the traditional task chair is what I need.
I've used a kneel chair and a balance ball chair and I must say the balance ball is waaaay better. For me, at least, the kneel chair put too much weight on my knees.
I was worried about hours spent with the kind of force on my knees. The comments here lead me to think that I was right to worry. I'm awfully glad that I asked!
I once had a knee chair. It was great for most of me, but it killed my knees (and I don't have knee issues - it just hurt!). Eventually, I got rid of it.
Some people at my office have a ball chair and swear it's great, but I've noticed nobody ever sits on it for more than a couple of days, and then it's back under somebody's desk again. It might be good now and then, but I think it must not work for most people longterm?
I now use a traditional chair and just try to correct my posture. It's helped a lot, but I'm not sure any chair can offset what I'm doing to myself by sitting for so many hours a day. Still, it's my own damn fault for not getting born to extremely wealthy people so I'd never have to earn a living! ;)
That's exactly what I worried about. My knees are fine but hours of sitting on them each day seemed like it could be painful.
Pretty damning praise for the ball chair. This needs to be an every day chair for me I don't have the room (or inclination) to have a backup chair. I was hoping to go minimalist but I suppose it's another task chair for me.
Thanks for the info because this is exactly what I wanted to know: whether these were appropriate for every day use as an office chair.
*snort* I suppose that I could try installing a toilet. ;) (Seems to be comfy long-term judging from some people's habits...)
You're a couple years younger than I am, you know. I've come back around to the task chair as nobody seems to use the other styles daily for working. I had my suspicions about long-term comfort of these chair styles and it seems that I was correct. Damn. I wanted to go minimalist. If only the Herman Miller Aeron Chair weren't ridiculously priced. *sigh* Perhaps I'll luck into another no name, super comfy task chair.

I'm old, so I'm gonna say "task chair". The others look too much like work just to sit on them.
