It would be hilarious (wait! it is already laughable!) if it weren't so sad. She didn't KNOW you couldn't "borrow" text directly from reference materials without citing the source? Just because it's a "romance" novel, she's exempt?? Bzuh? Basically, she's discounting the writing she does as "just romance" and telling people how ignorant she is. I would accuse her of playing dumb, but I'm not sure she's playing. I've been following this for awhile and I'm still amazed by the stupidity.
It makes my head hurt, honestly. I know she's 71 years old, but surely she has to know better - who the hell hasn't heard about plagiarism in school? I don't believe it was ok when our grandparents were young either. Bullshit.
Selena Kitt commented, at Mrs Giggles, "My feeling is, she got caught on the romance-writer treadmill, probably felt a lot of pressure from agent/publishers to put out moremoremoremore... It doesn't justify what she did." But there's probably something to Selena's observation. Romance publishers, especially the big ones, really like you to pump out the books. It keeps you in the public eye. Keep the warm and fuzzies flowing, and the readers at your door, right?
I didn't realize it was that many books. I knew it was a massive amount (our romance readers love Cassie Edwards) but had no idea it was that many! You're also right about romance publishers churning out books. And I do believe that's where romance writers get the reputation of being "formula writers". Cookie cutter books with the names and locations changed and the story is still the same. Is an author who comes to mind-- she wrote some damned good stuff early on...but now? Her latest stuff is predictable and weak. Though it could also be a result of "crossing" genres and writing suspense, like so many traditional romance writers do these days, most likely it for the very reasons you describe-- the need to churn out another book this year.
Signet really didn't help, either. It's not plagiarism!!! Oh, wait, maybe it is!

Except that CE's written 100 books, and only since the 80s ( ... )
