To hack or not to hack, that is the question...

So upon getting my 360 a wireless connection recently upon setup I found out my area has gained a couple of unsecured networks. So i fire up my wii (seeing it's the only thing I have that has wireless access and a browser) and go snooping. the one network is too weak/dodgy to get a solid connection to, but I guarantee i can lock the owners of the ( Read more... )

The problem is that it's hard to get somebody's attention this way. The only thing you can really change in the router itself that is noticeable is cut off their connection. Their most likely response is a frustrating and obviously unproductive call to their ISP. After that fails, they're looking at bringing in friends or a paid technician. Suddenly, your constructive lesson involves large amounts of time and potentially money, and that becomes a liability issue.

Maybe, if you're lucky, they'll have an exposed share file you can leave a note in informing them of their hackability, but the odds of that are staggeringly slim.

Seriously, I wish routers had some kind of hacker alert that works as follows: Keep a list of every MAC address that has ever connected to the router. If a new address is added, flag it as not being verified yet, and respond to the first verified MAC address with a page stating "A new device on MAC address has connected to your network for the first time. If this is not a recognized connection, click HERE ( ... )

of course they'd have to determine how the router got hacked in the first place. This one doesn't log worth shit. Tempts me to get a wireless card for my comp cause it would open so many more options then the Wii browser allows me. In the end I'll allow them their insecurity. But i will do all my big 360 DL's over it ;) maybe.
