I don't like Dickens much myself. The only one I ever really enjoyed was Nicholas Nickleby, but I've read most of them for one reason or another. Still, as much as I hate him, it does not compare to how much I had Steinbeck or anything Russian. BLECH.
Mrs. Stevens was a bitch and she's the reason her brilliant daughter dropped out of a great university and moved to NYC to be an actress/wait tables. And I used to envy her having a mother who was actually interested in her education, until I realized how much pressure she put on Mary Fran and how hard she was on her.
There are some great books on that list, though. You should get reading! I recommend Rebecca if you're in the mood for a classic or The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time for something contemporary.
That's why I read a chapter of Jane Austen or something else every night before bed. Just a few pages, 10 minutes or less, but at least it's something!
And I always carry a book with me in my purse, you never know when you'll find a spare moment.
