So it looks like we will definitely be going to Chicago. Those of you who are planning to attend, go ahead and make travel plans to fly, drive, rail or bus in on Thursday evening, June 13, or during the day on Friday, June 14. The movie will be Friday evening, with discussion/visiting/whatever after! It would be fun to do something on Saturday ( Read more... )

If you aren't too famillar with the city, I would avoid staying too far south of the park. I would absolutely not stay south of Roosevelt, and be hesitant to stay more than a few blocks south of Congress. Certainly don't stay west of the Dan Ryan expressway (I 90/94) but personally I wouldn't stay west of the river. The farther north you go, the more you will pay, but the nicer the area. I'd stay in the river north area, gold coast, or along the north bend of the river along n. Wacker Drive or in the heart of the loop. The near west side and south loop have been getting better in the past ten years, but I would not choose to stay there. They used to be really bad ( ... )

For all you who are going.... giordanno's deep dish pizza, my all time favorite. Uno's is overrated, yes it is the original, but not the best. Oven grinders is also amazing. No shortage of fantastic places to eat! But you gotta get the pizza. I have not had real legitimate deep dish pizza outside of Chicago. Lots of places claim to, but I haven't found it outside of my own kitchen.

Just read all of the above, general FYI, there really isn't a subway. The "el" is up above ground, elevated above the streets
. The only line to my knowledge that goes below ground at all is the red line which runs north and south, will take you up to wriggley field area from downtown. Just in case anyone is interested in catching a cubs game or just being in the area on game day to spend time at the local resteraunts and bars, it is quite an experience.

There was one I took when I was there that was underground (there were two lines I remembEr us hopping on when hubby and I were there (both were underground.)). Now a majority of the lines are above ground (I agree.)

I am so completely out of the loop with this trip. As you know, I haven't even been on LJ, only to pump out stories to keep my mind occupied.

I'm sorry I missed this post. I'll have to step back and figure this out, but as it stands now, I won't be able to make this trip.

My retirement begins May 2. Finances will be tight these first few months figuring out how much money I'll get to live on. Oh boy. I hate the finance end of it, but I am excited about NO MORE WORK!!

I'll be in touch hon.
