ancient love

It is always interesting to read poetry from thousands of years ago, or even just a few hundred years ago. I especially enjoyed reading Sappho's poetry, as it is nice to see a woman's perspective and thoughts from so long ago. I never really realized that she was probably writing her poetry for her audience, the men. So therefore, it makes sense for her to be writing poetry about loving women. Men could read the poetry and actually feel like it was written for them, and actually attach to it. That's an interesting way of looking at it. Maybe she was really passionate about everyone in life, and the "love" she described she had for women wasn't truely a love as in "head over heels, feeling like you're on fire" love, yet maybe just a genuine admiration or care for them. That's what I think about Sappho.

I don't think S wrote primarlily for a male audience. There were educated women in Greece as there were elsewhere; and in fact her poetry in more restrictive times and places tended to bother men.
