I don't watch that much anime; manga is for me. But after seeing discontent in a few places over Iruka's appearance in the recent Naruto anime side story, of course I had to check it out. I was born for reverse psychology.
My previous experience with the anime amounted to one episode, but my issue was with Sasuke, so no problems. I liked the opening of that episode, and I really liked this opening too.
I would have loved this cartoon as a kid. Something about the terrain when they're running around the woods fighting reminds me of Voltron and Transformers. Just those random tan cliff-faces and wide-mouthed caves. And the... I don't know. Fighting ridiculous bad guys! Prison fortress surrounded by lava! The flying and talking, the... random assignments of jobs to familiar characters. What were Izumo and Kotetsu doing as prison guards? Is that their usual assignment? Is there a rotation where nin take turns doing the duty? Would Iruka have to go? Jounin... Kakashi? Maybe I should just put Iruka in prison. Of the three obvious scenarios, only one is AU. What kind of ninja even have prisons housing what looked like several hundred inmates?
Iruka and Naruto! Taking on the world!
Iruka's role wasn't that bad. He wasn't in his element and I think he comported himself well despite the fact that he was off-balance emotionally. I guess that can be a weakness as well as a strength, which is fine by me. It seemed like he could have handled Mizuki there at the end, unless I read it wrong - the fact that he didn't doesn't make much difference. Anyway, obviously in my case the pedestal is more like a space station. Even if something knocked it it'd probably take years for the orbit to decay.
What I liked best was seeing Konoha people and environs in three dimensions (so to speak) Especially Tsunade. And Pakkun.
Although, I wouldn't have expected a lava pit.
And then the next episode annoyed me again, after starting off well. But it was fun while it lasted.
