Ah yes, old Vesto Melvin Slipher, master craftsman of spectroscopic reflection gratings. He pretty much invented the ruling engine, and made some fantastically fine spectrographs.
Of course now we flash them holographically, and get orders of magnitude higher resolution than would ever be possible with a ruling engine.
