Really this post is for redbraidsSo...I borrowed a thermomix for a couple of weeks. It was interesting using it without the emotional investment of having just blown $2k. My impression of it is that it is sturdy, well made, well designed, and equivalent to other high end kitchen appliances. The other high end kitchen appliances would all be retailing ( Read more... )

Thanks for this review! It sounds like you really gave it a workout. I haven't been jonesing after one, but I have been a bit curious, and this has satisfied my curiosity. It sounds like it might be most useful for those who have very limited space and want just one appliance? I'm overall pretty happy with our cooking routine and appliances, and the huge plus of our crockpot is that it is silent; and it can cook a large roast, a whole chicken, or large-volume stew/soup type meals for lots of leftovers/freezing. I use a small benchtop food processor (for vegie chopping, breadcrumb-making, etc), a stick blender (for creamy soups), a jug blender (for green smoothies and icecream/sorbet prep), an icecream maker, and so on, and they all do their jobs well. Not really interested in replacing them with one appliance that does mostly the same job, noisily and not as well, with the only plus being beepy buttons and somewhat less work on my part.

Yes - we do similar cooking with similar appliances. The only thing a thermomix is specialised to do is apply heat whilst stirring food at the same time. There isn't much that you cook that requires this - risotto, lemon butter, sauces. Other appliances if you have room to store them are usually going to do a better job than a thermomix, simply because they are built solely to do their particular function.

I confess to having made risotto in the crockpot too (after pre-frying) and it turned out fine.

I guess it would be especially good for white sauce/bechamel too?
