MAFIA: the end

After ten days on King's Court Island, 23 of 24 nations are dead. America stands as the sole survivor, a victor of the Demons' side. Though he is alone, without the fellow spirits that had helped him and encouraged him so, he has still won.

And now what?

The Butler is not here to help him. He swings quietly in a corner of the nameless room, victim to a fate, it seems, far preferable than staying in the Mansion for another minute. Perhaps he knows--... Perhaps he knows how the game truly ends...

The last Demon is alone, but a hero in his own right. After all, he succeeded.

Outside, there is the heavy sound of helicopter blades cutting through the air. It seems that help has arrived; the US Army has sent a team over to pick up their nation. Perhaps the Demon smirks; perhaps he has a walk around the Mansion before going to meet his men.

But it's time to take off the costume.

A curse cannot last forever. It is meant to touch the lives of those it is cast upon briefly, enough to make them suffer, enough to make them wish for death. A curse is a temporary thing; it is the repercussions of it that are the true punishment, because they resound forever after, loud and hollow and haunting.

When America arrived on King's Court Island, his soul was taken, snatched up easily by a hungry force from a world far removed from our own.

...

...

...

And it's just as easily let go.

The Demon, having completed its goal, fades away, unlocks its vicious black claws from where they have dug deep into the heart of the nation. It is satisfied; it has fed and it has ravaged and America has been the perfect vessel for its desires. It gives a final taunting whisper of death before it vanishes like smoke, leaving just traces of itself behind on the soul it had just occupied.

And suddenly, America will remember. He will not only remember, but he will, for the first time in ten days, be himself again.

He will remember each deceptive move he has made, each kill wrought by his own hands, and his promises to finish killing the rest once the other Demons had died. He will remember, but only in the way that makes it seem as though he were being controlled- like a puppet- for the last ten days. He will remember blood, screams, and terror. He will remember enjoying it. He will remember all of it in intricate detail...

It is what follows the curse that is most horrifying of all.

As the helicopter touches down on the vast green lawn of the Mansion and America stares it down, he'll find a gun in his hands. It's a familiar pistol; it's been given another bullet, somehow.

The choice- life or death- is once again yours, America.

Vesti la giubba.
