Change your style

Mar 10, 2009 15:02

My art style changes a lot. I mean A LOT. My Comic will look different sometimes page to page. Usually the changes are pretty minor and gradually over time produce very dramatic changes. It's what I do. I SUCKED horribly at the start of drawing EE. I couldn't draw as far as I am concerned (I mean look at the very first EE page). EE was never made ( Read more... )

I think one of the greatest parts of being a webcomic artist is the evolution of artwork. It always saddens me to see a webcomicker who has been around forever and has barely made any improvement, though (I will not name names, but I'm sure you know a few of the same I do). Artists should always be striving to improve, and that's the beauty of a deadline. I can make the same claims you can; look at the first page of Bardsworth and the most recent one (or better yet, compare the first page of Bardsworth to my recent DA stuff).

You've come leaps and bounds since I started reading you, what, a couple of years ago now? I look forward to seeing the next evolution of your artwork. :-)

Yeah, I know overall this wasn't anything worth getting upset over, which is why I just pouted about it in journal and not anywhere more direct. But if a fan is aware of my style changes and experimenting, I'd rather them not complain to me along the way. Reading through the archives should show them what to expect. There's been plenty of times when I've done a EE style change I knew right away it didn't work but then I just knew not to carry it over into the next one ( ... )

I must admit that your current style isn't my favourite so far either, but... Honestly, it's your comic (as said by you as well).
You are doing this to evolve, and I really like the fact that you clearly are evolving. If that means that you're going over some changes that doesn't fit my subjective taste as well as other styles, so be it. Odds are, that the style will change again, and it will always go forward toward greater quality and craftmansship in the long run.

Right now it really does look like there's clear visual changes for practically every page. I find the very fact that people are complaining about your new style rather absurd. As fast as things are changing at the moment it can hardly be called a "clear style", so why not just give you time to find the way you want to make things visually, before starting to complain about it? X)

The thing about most webcomics is that people seem to confuse them for graphic novels-- which they aren't (usually). Webcomics are always constantly reinventing themselves. This is especially true about yours. Honestly, I like seeing that. It's why the webcomic as a medium is so interesting to me, because you're actually watching an artist grow as an illustrator and storyteller. Having issues with a current style seems kind of silly, it's all just part of the game ( ... )

Yeah I know I was making a bigger deal than need be, but I feel I have that right with my journal it's where I vent things and I usually feel better afterward. As I mentioned, I am just extremely self conscious over the comic, I personally think it all sucks anyway so I can often react badly to negative comments.

And here I thought you were angry at me you hadn't been responding to any of my other messages.

Webcomics art evolves and people need to understand that...I mean if it didn't EE would still look the way it was back in 2003 and I doubt the readers would enjoy that more than the way it looks now. While criticism comes with anything anybody ever does who gives a shit. As long as you like it go with it. The story is gonna remain the same and that's what matters.

P.S. We're humans and we know people bleed. I mean it's not like gumdrops and rainbows are circulating through our body instead of red blood cells. Now you need to show us some titties...haha j/k. While I was shocked that the latest storyline had that much blood, I thought it was cool and definitely had me wondering if I was reading the same comic. EVERYONE BLEEDS PEOPLE...GET USED TO IT!
