I think there's a difference between 'what it is' and 'usage'.
The reason 'being a clique' is a problem is that it shuts other people out and excludes them even if they make efforts to be brought in and join in. Others are ignored, or put down, or refused while the members rarely make efforts to go outside each other or bring others in.
It's a problem in RP because it's just not fun for the people watching all these things happen, knowing their own efforts will be sidelined or taken over instead of acknowledged or getting them anywhere. It's elitist, and it can dampen a game if major happenings are also in clique hands, making it hard to participate in game things as a whole.
There's a difference, theoretically, between 'friends who enjoy playing together but also step outside, tag around, and include others' and 'a clique'.
That said, it's also used as an easy way to finger people who really are just friends who enjoy playing together.
I see "cliques" that do that, but is putting people down and actively making an effort to push people out on the same level as simply not tagging outside a group? I see those put on equal levels (not by you, but by people on anoncomm and the like).
Hm, I don't know, honestly. For my view personally, the problem starts when it interferes with fun and especially when it interferes with the dynamics and fun of a game as a whole. When it's not really hurting anyone, and when it is. That can theoretically happen both by simply excluding or by pushing out actively.
I guess my problem (and let me use Ads as an example, though it does apply to most large games) is when this clique's actions, whether it be pushing out people or simply ignoring tags, is elevated about the rest and made out to be a huge problem when I do see lots of players willing to tag out and include others. There are over 100 muns in the game, I can't imagine they're all cliquey. Sure, there may be a group that some consider cliquey but does it really matter when there's so many other muns not involved in it?
I guess I'm a bit more willing to say this since I've never felt pushed out or ignored by any clique.
