I was about to say I could lend you Lolita, but I think I already have! LOL!
re; book recs, I'd definitely recommend this novel I borrowed from Katti! It's called Out, and it's about a japanese woman who murders her husband, and her friends help her out with it. I can type out the blurb if you like! It's really good though, I can't seem to put it down (always the sign of a good book imho!)
Otherwise... I have Memoirs Of A Geisha, and although you haven't italicized it, I really liked the book. You're welcome to borrow that if you like! (If you like that, I also have The Last Empress/Empress Orchid, and they're in the similar kind of vein.)
Have you ever heard of the Sabriel series by Garth Nix? I love it, it's a bit like a mix of Harry Potter and the His Dark Materials series! It's really enchanting, I chomped my way through the whole lot in less than a week (and a few of those days were spent impatiently waiting for the last two books to arrive!)
Cookie so missed out when she arrived late, this was exactly the conversation we had last Sunday morning. Silly billy.
OMG. WE SHOULD START A BOOK CLUB. Except, the thing about book clubs? They have to read things in short spaces of times... and sometimes I fall asleep and forget to read things :( Hmm. Might have to reconsider this idea.
OMGOMGOMG. I finished Out, and it was SO GOOD. I had to go back and flick through to re-read some particularly brilliant parts. I want more! Must see if author has written anything else that's been translated! ♥!
BOOK CLUB. Although yes, we are all a bit useless at timeframes, I think. Perhaps a book circle? Where we pass on good books to each other and can discuss them once we've read them? We could make an LJ community or something, and we could make a post about a book we've read/passed on/etc, and we could discuss it/squeal about it/love-or-hate it in the comments?
I know, silly Cookie! We should have just recorded the conversation to give to her, LOL! I was trying to remember everything we recommended!
OUT IS FABULOUS. And I have the other two books she has had translated - Grotesque, which is good in a nice way, but not as excellent as Out (actually neither of her other books are AS good) and Real World. I will lend them both to you because they are still good, even if not as fabulous as Out.
Book Circle. The Circle of Books! I agree with this idea, it is amazing and we should LJ community it asap. I love this idea. Totally encouraging. What would we call it? The Comm, I mean!
The list is clearly bollocks, though. It refers to both The Lion The Witch & The Wardrobe and The Chronicles of Narnia under different numbers, and the same with the complete works of Shakespeare and Hamlet.
You, lady, deserve a cupcake or something exciting for making this brilliant point! ♥
THE ISLAND. Jane Rogers. I'm going to keep pushing it at you until you read it. Because you must. And perhaps "Exquiste Corpse" but that's because I'm grotesque and love gore.
Ooh. The Wrong Boy - Willy Russell. And... actually, Black Swan Green was quite good too - by David Mitchell. (Should you ever desire to read Cloud Atlas I can lend you that as well. But I would never advise it.)
OH. AND TWILIGHT. DUH. CLEARLY SOMEONE HAS TO RECOMMEND THAT TO YOU IN AN IRONIC JEST. And I hope you realize that it was ironic, because otherwise the book you bought me for Christmas would be very silly. XD
