Charlie Wilson's War (spoilers)

Today, my mum and I went to see Charlie Wilson's war to take our mind off our worries.

It's amazing to think that all of this was going on while I grew up in total ignorance of it.

I am no Tom Hanks fan and, while he was not terrible in this movie, his performance hasn't changed my mind. This was a film with the story, not the big names, as the star. Phillip Seymour Hoffman just have to be singled out though for singular praise, for his character who was strangely unlikeable and yet noble at the same time.

I did find myself troubled by this film. On the one hand, the desire to kill Russians - so blatantly expressed - offended me, but then I have never been in the situation these people were in. When I witnessed the Soviet Gunships strafing fleeing unarmed civilians, even little kids, my mood changed. I was still ashamed by my reaction though.

I did find it amazing that Wilson managed to get Congress to authorise 500 million dollars to buy weaponry and yet couldn't get one million to build schools. *shakes head*

This is not normally my type of movie, but in the absence of any sci-fi/horror that I haven't already seen, I thought I might as well. And my mum thinks Julia's brilliant, so we went. I have to say, it's a phenomenal, thought provoking film. Well worth going to see.
