My thoughts...needless to say, SPOILERS!!!
Small worlds was one of my favourite, if not the favourite, episode from Series One, so when I saw that Peter Hammond had scripted this ep, I was excited.
Maybe that's why it failed to live up to my expectations; I created my own hype for it.
The idea of the night travellers was good, and creepy, but the travellers themselves just weren't scary. And their method of dispatching their victims wasn't a patch on the Mara from season one. The story itself was like a puzzle you can't quite get your head around, and give up on to go back to another day.
There were lots of questions but not enough info to draw conclusions from. Were the NTs baddies before they got caught on film or because of it? The bit at the beginning suggests before. But what were they? Where did they come from? The story seemed to suggest that they stole people's last breaths, but at the very start of the episode, they steal actual people. Why the change in MO, and what happened to the people they took?
I actually found the episode boring, and the only real spark came when Ianto thought he saw Jack on the film. That possibility intrigued me; what was Jack doing there? His reluctance to explain it fully (and was it me or did I detect a touch of angst when he was telling the team about it) poked some interest into the episode, but it was never taken anywhere. I have my own ideas on that, and a fic is wriggling about in my head now.
This is actually the first let down of the series for me, which is a pity that they fell at one of the last hurdles, but it's a big improvement on last season. Hopefully they can keep the next three episodes strong and that the rumours I've been hearing are just that.
