FWIW, my default icon is the Oak of Reformation, where some of Kett's rebels were hanged after their failed rebellion. I used to drive past it on my trips from London to Norwich.
*and* Kett's Rebellion is period -- 1549. I'm not sure what Hugh's part in it would have been. Yet. Hugh's got about 10 - 12 years to catch up to Robert Kett, as in Hugh's world it's still somewhere around 1535 - 1537, before the dissolution of Walsingham Priory and he's still making good money off the pilgrim trade. But he's somewhat concerned with the various goings on and has been investing in property in Norwich, just in case.
Problem is that somebody would want a world government. Frankly, I'm not comfortable with the notion of giving up the right to tell other countries to fuck off, when they want to regulate our inside-the-country affairs.
I definitely don't want a monolithic world government.
I just don't see that geographic nation states are necessarily the way to go. The geographically contiguous nation state could easily be replaced (in theory) by any sort of association that worked. It could be religious, tribal, professional, cultural or even corporate. It could have no actual physical territory, but just exist as an intellectual grouping on teh intarwebz.
Yep, it's balkanisation at its finest. But it might be a way avoid creating empires.

In so far as England (as distinct from the UK) has a national day it should be April 23 -- St George's Day.
