[IF] January C - Photo Prompt

It was just a postscript...a ridiculous moment of normalcy in an otherwise psychotic life he’d forged for himself, and he was so grateful for it he had to cover his mouth to keep from laughing.

P.S.: Nothing to do with anything, but someone sent me this and I thought it was pretty. Haven’t looked it up, though...what do you think of it?

Michael hadn’t been communicating with Rachel for long, but the safety of the internet and free email accounts allowed him enough anonymity to keep in touch with her frequently enough that they’d gotten a little easier with each other. She was helping as best she could...but she still couldn’t trust her. So he didn’t.

She made him curious about her by being curious herself...he was using a small cluster of email accounts to keep the contact varied enough that no one would notice a pattern, so he usually initiated contact. When he did, though, she seemed to cram a day or two of talking and interacting into the twenty or so minutes at a time he was available to email back and forth at a local library or internet café. Personal questions, observations...and now email attachments.

It was the strangest email pen pal relationship he’d ever heard of...but in a way, he was grateful for it.

Knowing he’d have to abandon this email account just in case she found any way to trace him through a hidden file in the attachment, he downloaded it and peered curiously at the odd photograph that appeared before him...some sort of star, maybe? It was interesting, she was right about that.

Clicking ‘reply’, Michael began to type.

I’LL PASS ALONG WHAT YOU FOUND OUT ABOUT MAHONE...WE APPRECIATE YOUR HELP, I HOPE YOU KNOW THAT.

AS FOR THAT FILE...MIGHT BE SOME KIND OF STAR, I GUESS...BUT YOU’RE RIGHT, IT IS INTERESTING LOOKING. AND BELIEVE ME...IT HAS A LOT TO DO WITH EVERYTHING. THANKS FOR SENDING IT TO ME.

STAY WELL...AND BE CAREFUL.

He was about to hit ‘send’ when an impulse struck him...he thought it out, analyzed it, then realized how ridiculous it was to do something like that. Still...every impulse had to be checked in circumstances like these.

Finally satisfied with his introspection, he smiled slightly and kept typing.

P.S.: THAT PICTURE’S LOVELY, BUT MAYBE NEXT TIME YOU COULD SEND ME A BETTER ONE...FOR THE RECORD, ALL I’VE EVER SEEN IS THE BACK OF YOUR HEAD. I’D LIKE TO KNOW BETTER JUST WHO I’M TALKING TO.

Hitting ‘send,’ Michael logged out of the account, stood, and left the library, feeling a little lighter than he had when he walked in.

It was odd, how easy it was to forget how important that human connection was. Lincoln hadn’t forgotten...that much was clear. Michael, however...it wasn’t always that easy.

But any day when he could feel more like a man and less like a fugitive, he’d snap up in a heartbeat.
