Two Saturdays ago I went to my good friend Kevin's Stag & Doe in Hamilton. It was rather bizarre seeing so many people that I went to High School with. I embarassed myself a couple of times when people came up to me and said "Dan remember Me?" Sadly I could not, and they say that the mind is the second thing to go... I was actually pleasantly ( Read more... )

I worked the wedding/stag and doe racket a few years ago with a gentleman who owned his own company. The trick is that you need to own your own speakers/amp etc (laptops are do the trick, but generally people are more impressed with Djs who use real decks...especially when they are forking out that kind of money) and have a vehicle big enough to move it all.

For weddings, depending on whether they wanted dinner music too or just the "dance" portion afterwards, we would charge upwards of $700-$900. Stag and does were around $500, but we organized and ran most of the games. So it is worth it, if you do enough of them, can tolerate the music (sadly to get the business and a lot of it, you need to be willing to play the mainstream crap), and can find good equipment at a decent price.

Good point about the real decks, I have always been very weary of DJing from a laptop in the event of a crash. Mind you I guess DJ decks could fail as well. You are correct when I saw that she was using a laptop I thought the $350 was even more ludicrous.

you should totally do it man! you're one of the most personable djs ive ever met and you love to please everyone, take pride in the science rather than the music, you might even discover some wicked new tunes :D

Thanks Nick, you are always the voice of reason. I really do like all kinds of music and must admit I do lenjoy a lot of the mainstream stuff. Djing for me has never been about the money, I love our scene and it has always been a labour of love.

350, I know that some DJ companies make a lot more.
If you don't want to start your own company, maybe there are DJ places around you looking to hire?
That way you don't have to invest in equipment either.
But it is rentable.
I think you should go for it.
