After exiting the tunnel system that lead from Orran, we found ourselves on the side of a mountain with the city of Orran stretched out below us. We were attempting to figure out which way to go when a rat with a mirror strapped to its back ran up to us and played a message from Lord Trowbridge which relayed the fact that Orran wasn't safe, that Ashtar's ship is near, that they are heading towards the estate and that something is wrong with Miden, but the message was cut off at that point. The mirror was a scrying mirror and looking into it briefly showed a flag in the colors of the royal family.
We moved on and headed into a cavern where we had an encounter with goblins. After killing nearly all of the goblins, one female (nicknamed Lolly Gob) surrenders and we try to ask her questions about what's going on. Onath, though, is intent upon killing the goblin and charges at her. None of our more mild efforts at stopping him work, so I'm forced to throw a dagger at his Achilles heel, which effectively stops him and leaves him with a pronounced limp for the rest of the day. Lolly Gob, however, proves to be helpful and we end up letting her go.
We also had an encounter with some kidnappers, who screamed at the goblins: "Kill them--they're here to save the bitch!" "The bitch" turned out to be Lady Davina Allexi, whom we were able to save from her erstwhile kidnappers. We discovered that she had recently married into the House of Allexi, a minor house in Orran, and that she was kidnapped in an alley and was presumably being held for ransom.
While in the cavern, we discover a chest which contains: raw zircon worth 50gp each, 100gp in coins, 2 stolen paintings (one of Easar, one of a woodland) worth 50gp each, and a master's wand of scorching burst, which Aideena takes. One of our number (Onath?) refuses to take anything from the chest, so the remaining four of us split the money evenly; Jack holds onto the raw zircon and I am holding the paintings.
Following this, we escape from the cavern and Lady Allexi heads back to Orran; she had offered us assistance as a thank you for rescuing her, but we decided that heading into Orran would be dangerous--particularly given that the murder of the Baron was committed by Tavrix, a high ranking official in the royal government who had escaped justice. As a result, we kindly refuse, but she promises to remember our kindness to her and that we can count on her to aid us if we need it. Aideena is less than impressed--something that even the most oblivious of our number have realized--but the rest of us thank her and head along the road.
While moving along the road, we encounter an injured horse, but we fail to do anything other than make it run away from us, scared. We keep moving.
A little further along, we run into another horse tied to a wagon. Around the wagon, there is a wild-eyed man named Pung and three of his associates (cronies? minions?). Before we can quietly back away, the wild-eyed man screams at his associates to kill us because he had forseen it. We notice that he has some sort of dark ball that has a magical signature no one in the group had encountered before. After defeating the group, we get a closer look at the orb-thing, though none of us want to get too close. Onath, in particular, seems incredibly wary and willing to just leave it behind. We notice that the grass around it is decayed; Targoth argues that we can't leave such an obviously dangerous object where anyone can find it.
Aideena attempts to lift it using mage hand, but that seems to activate it and she has an experience with something like pure chaos, absolute darkness that is huge and terrifying. The spell breaks and the orb falls back to the earth. It appears to be winking at us. We begin to notice that the ground decays quicker when Onath backs away from it and he seems to be the only one who can get near without ill effects. Eventually, the rest of us persuade him to take the orb, which he does and we head back to the road to continue our journey.
We begin to head through some mountains when we see a massive cloud of dust on the road ahead of us. Not keen on encountering an army, we scrabble up the face of the cliff and find ourselves in a sort of caldera which is out of sight from the road. Once up there, we found ourselves face to face with three ankhegs--which are huge insect-like creatures--and began to fight with them. While fighting, a small group of drakes makes their way cautiously towards us and begins watching. When Targoth notices them, he calls to them in draconic to assist us, and after a few moments of uncertainty, they help us defeat the ankhegs.
After the battle, the drakes lead us to a cavern where we find a Dragonborn by the name of Spyridon Trueborn. He and Targoth have a lengthy discussion about Dragonborns and humans in which we discover that Spyridon isn't very fond of humans--or, for that matter, seemingly of any race besides other Dragonborns. We also hear about someone named Saresh who was a mentor to Targoth. Spyridon inspects Targoth's sword and offers to use an orb on it to enchant the sword.
Spyridon, though not fond of non-Dragonborns, nonetheless is kind enough to ask the drakes to inspect the road to see what might be there, as well as offering the group his hospitaly--something we're happy to accept. Before heading to bed, he offers some advice: namely, to steer clear of the ruins to the north because they are the territory of the Great White Dragon, Samskeyti.
