Sterling Silver Wire

Oct 13, 2009 17:25

For those of you inclined to know about such things. Where is the best place to buy sterling silver wire? Not the copper core stuff. That's easy to find locally.

I need to start making use of the mountains of sea glass we have collected, and I figure a little wire wrapping would be a good way to go about it.

Are you needing a local place, or are you interested in ordering online? I ask because czarina69 would be glad to pass on info on her sources. Just tell her I sent you.

I'd love to find something local, but I don't think there are any options. Haven't checked the RISD store, though. They do teach jewelry classes...

I'll poke her and see what she has to say :) I've found a number of online sources, but it'd be good to have some firsthand knowledge.

RISD has a store for metals and sculptural things called the Metcalf store, which is fun anyway. Even more so is Wolf Meyer, in Olneyville, on the road that leads from Manton off to the bike path. It's a three-level warehouse/supply place with collections from many long-gone suppliers. Don't know if they have sterling, but if you don't know about this place, it's worth checking anyway - they have a lot of chains, along with beads and etc. It's one block from where I live, so I might want to go this weekend if you haven't been yet. Oh, it's a wholesale place so you need to buy about $50 of things, but the last time I bought a lot of lockets, tiny boxes, paper 4th of july binoculars.

Wolf Meyer sounds amazing. Sometime when I have $50 to blow on random supplies I'll have to check it out. I've got a million ideas buzzing around in my head, so they may be the answer to some of that in the future. I just need to try and stay focused, though. I don't think that's the place to go for staying focused right now.

I'll definitely have a look at the Metcalf store.

Thanks!

When I do feel brave enough to go to Wolf Meyer, I'll let you know.

Another artist that I follow buys her sterling silver wire from Metalliferous. I don't know if they have what you're looking for, but their catalog is extensive.
