I'd avoid using any paint, but suggest maybe tying red ribbons to it -- really, anything red will attract them. I've seen hummingbirds flirting with Christmas lights. It looks bright enough to me, though -- many feeders have less red than that and attract birds fine. Many sites even discourage dyeing the sugar water, since there's some question of whether dyes are good for them. Hopefully he'll figure things out!

I buy the premade stuff and it's red like that. I was just worried because he's hovered around the glass part but hasn't bothered to poke his face into the feeding ports which are dull. I don't want to buy a new feeder when this one works fine. But I'll look for the ribbons.

Yep, even thought about putting out old fruit to attract fruit flies for them. I have specifically planted a hummingbird garden just for him with Porter Weed, Zinnias, Fuschias, Salvia, columbine, petunias, agastache, purple cone flowers and honeysuckle to name a few of my plants. I knew the flowers would attract him more than an artifical feeder. But now that I have a hummingbird I figured it was time to supplement with one. I do change out the food though as it does get very hot here. He only comes in the cool of the morning and evening. But I suspecthe's a young adult and may-be has never used a feeder. He doesn't even know how yummy Zinnas are for him and Saliva. He's really missing out. :(
