How about if you had a linear model and wanted to find information about something before you started (which would be x=0 or the y-intercept). Let's also say that this is a decreasing linear model, so it would have a negative slope.
If you plugged in, say -2 for x, then you could find the amount of that quantity 2 minutes ago, and you would multiply the -2 by the negative slope, which would be positive. Which would make sense because if you have something decreasing, if you look back in time you would have had more of it.
