I've never had a chance to mess around with 3D Max since the 3D Ani course I took dropped us into Maya D:
I've heard that 3D Max is better for the modeling process and tends to make life MUCH easier. I've heard about this magical "z-brush" and how I've yearned to mess with it.
I'm not sure what the advantages/disadvantages of Max are over Maya because I've never used Maya. Zbrush is only really for fine detail, most of your modeling will still occur in Max since you don't really want the actual silhouette of the character to differ drastically if you're just going to inevitably apply the Zbrush stuff as a texture map. I played with it once, but have yet to use it formally - because hell, this is my fourth model ever, second actual character model. (I went... pen, spool of thread, lizard robot, this). o_O
