Character Background: (Warning: this application contains ending spoilers.)

Kotetsu is one of the two titular characters in the series: a man in his late thirties who lives his life as the superhero, Wild Tiger. He lives in Sternbild City, where being a superhero is more than just serving the people and protecting the city. Sternbild's more prominent superheroes are sponsored by various companies and wear their logos on their costumes. They are also managed and followed by the crew of a show called Hero TV, which turns their lives into an over the top combination of reality tv and game show. Heroes compete against each other to rescue citizens and arrest criminals, earning them points. Whomever holds the most points is dubbed King of Heroes at the end of a broadcasting season.

Kotetsu isn't really into the showy entertainment part of being a hero, however. His life as a superhero was inspired by a dangerous encounter he experienced when he was ten years old. He was involved in a bank robbery where a hero named Mr. Legend arrived to save the day. One of the robbers took Kotetsu as a hostage, but was unwittingly defeated when Kotetsu's powers activated due to his fear of being hurt, throwing the man off of him and up into the air. Kotetsu, like other heroes, is a NEXT, which is a human being with mutated genes that give them super powers. Kotetsu was uncomfortable with his power, but Mr. Legend told him that NEXT were meant to use their powers for good.

In high school, Kotetsu had a reputation for being a great fighter. Antonio Lopez, who would later become the hero Rock Bison, lived in a neighboring town and was interested in his ability. Kotetsu, however, would ignore his challenges. Antonio's gang members take Kotetsu's classmate Tomoe hostage, unbeknownst to their boss's knowledge, to get Kotetsu to accept the challenge. Kotetsu and Antonio fight, but neither can best the other. Things grow grim for Tomoe, however; the werehouse she's being kept in catches fire, and Kotetsu uses his Hundred Power to rescue her. He then explains to Antonio that he only uses his power to help others, not to enhance his fighting. Antonio and Kotetsu then become sparring partners as well as friends.

After high school, Tomoe and Kotetsu are married, and they have a daughter named Kaede. Sadly Tomoe dies to a deadly disease five years before the start of the series, and Kaede goes to live with Kotetsu's mother Anju in Oriental Town while Kotetsu secretly works as a superhero in Sternbild for the company Top MaG. Kotetsu loves his daughter, but Kaede doesn't exactly return the sentiment, since Kotetsu's job as a hero often puts a dent in his plans to pay visits to her.

Kotetsu is a so-so hero in comparison to the other Hero TV stars, which include Rock Bison, Blue Rose, Dragon Kid, Origami Cyclone, Fire Emblem, and the fan favorite, Sky High. When the series starts, the heroes are finishing out a season pursuing a trio of armed robbers in a high speed chase. He gets called 'the Crusher of Justice' by the Hero TV announcer because of his infamy for destruction of public property during his attempts to fight crime. He doesn't break things on purpose, but Kotetsu believes people's lives are more important than property damage. When it looks like Wild Tiger will catch a break and be able to apprehend the villain, his power shorts out, and a mysterious newcomer known as Barnaby Brooks Jr. (the other titular character) appears on the scene and makes the arrest, attracting everybody's attention and curiosity. He also shares the exact same power as Wild Tiger: the Hundred Power, which increases a NEXT's strength and speed a hundredfold for about five minutes. Barnaby also feels no need to hide his identity, removing his mask as he introduces himself.

Eventually, Wild Tiger's tendancy for destruction brings bad news for Kotetsu. Top MaG's president, Ben Jackson, informs Kotetsu after the King of Heroes is crowned for the season that all of his destruction has cost Top MaG so much money that the company has gone bankrupt. When it looks like Wild Tiger's career is over, he is rehired by Apollon Media to continue his role...but as partner to the newcomer Barnaby. Apollon Media feels that having a superhero tag team will earn the public's interest.

At first, Kotetsu and Barnaby do not get along at all. Barnaby sees Kotetsu as a lowly and clumsy sidekick past his prime, while Kotetsu questions Barnaby's intentions of being a hero, since Barnaby has absolutely no problem participating in all the glitz and glamour of interviews and media spots. They even call each other names; Barnaby calls Kotetsu 'Old Man' while Kotetsu calls Barnaby 'Lil Bunny' (or Bunny-chan) because of the long ear-shaped prongs on his super suit visor. They also have different ways of dealing with criminals. Kotetsu relies on instinct and brute force, while Barnaby likes to think things through with a clear head.

The two men slowly learn to get along with each other as the days go by, and Kotetsu realizes that Barnaby does have good intentions in being a hero. Kotetsu is the kind of guy to downplay his good deeds. In the one-shot manga, Kotetsu tells the other heroes when he arrives late to Justice Tower that he overslept. In reality, he was late for the meeting because he'd helped a woman in labor head to the hospital. But despite all they do, Kotetsu and Barnaby still have some troubles in trusting each other.

Their trust is put to the test when a terrorist group called Ouroboros attacks the main roads of Sternbild with dozens of machine-gun wielding robots. The mechas are piloted by an army of Mad Bear dolls brought to life by a member of the terrorist group named Kriem. Kriem and her henchman Hans appear on TV all over town and demand that their leader, Jake Martinez, be released from prison. If the city does not abide by her wishes, she will sink the city with her Mad Bears. The city plays by her rules and releases Jake, but Ouroboros does not pull back their army. Eventually the heroes agree to a one-on-one tournament against Jake, who is an extremely powerful NEXT with two powers. If one of the heroes win, the enemies will withdraw. Sky High, Rock Bison, and Wild Tiger are all defeated with ease, but Kotetsu manages to catch Jake off guard and kick him in the head at the end of his battle.

Kotetsu is badly injured and rushed to the hospital, and the tournament is put on a standstill until morning because Agnes, the producer of Hero TV, convinces Jake that the show won't get high ratings and viewers if it's shown late into the night. As Barnaby goes to face Jake and avenge his parents' deaths, Kotetsu wakes up, and uses his Hundred Power to quickly heal his wounds enough that he can leave the hospital, but he still maintains internal injuries. He visits Saito, Apollon Media's engineer who made Wild Tiger and Barnaby's super suits, and they create what Wild Tiger claims is a bomb that releases ultrasonic sound waves. He tells Barnaby that Jake's secret second power is heightened hearing after approaching the hero during battle. When Barnaby uses the bomb, it does give off sound waves, but it also activates as a highly powerful flash bomb, which disorients Jake long enough that Barnaby can defeat him. Kotetsu actually knew that Jake's second power was mind-reading, but he didn't want Jake or Barnaby to realize what he knew; the 'old man' is smarter than he looks and acts.

After dealing with Ouroboros, time passes, and Tiger and Barnaby finally start to truly trust each other which, in turn, boosts their crime-fighting effectiveness and causes them to rise in the ranks. Barnaby takes the title of King of Heroes and Wild Tiger reaches 4th place instead of next to last. The heroes get a lot more publicity than they're used to, which Kotetsu doesn't like because, despite gaining fame, he'd still rather be protecting the city than doing advertisements and interviews. When they do get a chance to fight crime, Kotetsu notices that his powers are much stronger than he's used to: he hits harder and he can jump a lot farther. At first he's convinced that his powers are evolving for the better, but he notices that the Hundred Power doesn't last as long as it's supposed to in turn. Kotetsu's former boss, Ben, who is now a cab driver, overhears Kotetsu's excitement over his powers increasing during a radio show, and despairs. He meets Kotetsu for coffee and explains to Kotetsu that his powers are indeed getting stronger, but that it's the sign of a rare condition for NEXT that means his superpowers are about ready to flicker out like a candle. Kotetsu secretly keeps track of this possibility, and he is indeed losing one-three seconds of activity from his Hundred Power with each use.

Uncertain of what to do with himself, Kotetsu takes vacation time off and returns to Oriental Town to visit with his mother, daughter, and older brother Muramasa. He remembers the promise he made to his wife during his visit: that he would always be a hero. Near the end of his visit home, a rainstorm hits Oriental Town, and causes mudslides which barracade Kaede inside of the shrine she had been praying in front of before the storm. Kotetsu uses the Hundred Power to focus his hearing, and picks up Kaede's cries for help. After locating her, he uses the rest of his powers to remove the trees, but the last one he manages to move without the Hundred Power. After saving her, he realizes that he can still be a hero for his daughter, even if he quits being a hero in Sternbild. His mother's strength is disappearing, and he doesn't want Kaede to be alone. The next day, Kotetsu decides to go home early to turn in his resignation letter so that he can move back home as soon as possible, especially since he discovers that Kaede is a NEXT as his train leaves Oriental Town.

Kotetsu's plan to quit gets put on hold when Barnaby realizes that it wasn't Jake Martinez who killed his parents. Thanks to a photograph shown to him by his former housekeeper, Samantha, Barnaby realizes that it was Mr. Maverick, the man who raised Barnaby after his parents' death and is the CEO of the duo's sponsor company, who was actually responsible for their murder. Maverick is actually a NEXT with the ability to alter the memories of anybody he touches. After rewriting Barnaby's memories again, Maverick hatches a grandiose plan to deal with Kotetsu, who is the only other person that knows Jake Martinez wasn't the murderer. Once it's been put into action, the entire team of heroes, Saito, Lloyds (Kotetsu's boss), and Agnes are affected by Maverick's memory altering, and Stern Bild considers him a homicidal NEXT and not the hero he once was. As for the hero Wild Tiger, Maverick replaces him with an android, and the heroes claim that not even they know Wild Tiger's true identity.

Fortunately for Kotetsu, Ben, Kaede, Muramasa, and Anju know that he is innocent. Kaede uses her savings to get a ride to Sternbild, and Ben helps get Kotetsu to safety. Kotetsu dons his old costume from Top MaG, and calls out the heroes. Once they've gathered, he attempts to jar their memories by bringing up personal quirks and information that they would only divulge to a friend. Blue Rose is the only one who seems convinced that Kotetsu is telling the truth, but it is Kaede who undoes Maverick's dirty work. Kaede's power is the ability to copy the special ability of any NEXT she touches. Maverick had patted her on the head earlier in the day when she'd gone looking for Barnaby's help, and in worry for her father, Kaede unleashed the power on the heroes. Unfortunately, Sky High unknowingly pats her on the shoulder, so when Barnaby arrives on the scene, she can't undo the memory altering on him as she has replaced Maverick's power with Sky High's.

Kotetsu lures Barnaby to chase him through the city, while the heroes are left to deal with the fake Wild Tiger. Without Kaede's power, Kotetsu is able to knock Barnaby back to his senses. Saito and Ben meet up with the boys, and make their way to Justice Tower, where Maverick has taken Kaede and the other heroes hostage. The fake Wild Tiger is sent to deal with Tiger and Barnaby. Maverick unveils his true plan: to replace all NEXT with android heroes built by Dr. Rotwang, who is prejudiced against NEXT.

Barnaby and Kotetsu are able to stop the android Wild Tiger, but at the cost of Kotetsu getting badly injured. It is at this time he finally tells Barnaby about his condition. The other heroes are able to escape and rescue Kaede, while Saito prevents the backup Wild Tigers from activating.

A year later, Kotetsu's Hundred Power only lasts one minute, but he still tries to play the hero when he can alongside the younger, less-experienced generation of heroes, the Second League, and Barnaby.

Abilities/Special Powers:
- Hundred Power: Kotetsu's physical strength, senses, and abilities increase hundred-fold for five minutes. He can also use this power to instantly heal up cuts and bruises (but it's not very effective on serious injuries). After this, the power must recharge for an hour before it can be used again. Whenever Kotetsu uses his power, his eyes turn blue, and his body emits a soft blue glow.

- Super Suit: Kotetsu's robotic armored suit is extremely resistant to fire, various attacks, bullets, water, etc. It also gives him a link to the Hero TV crew, various data feeds, and a feature that keeps track of when his power will fade once activated (the crew link and data feeds becoming unusable when he arrives in Wonderland). Grappling hooks with super strong cords are attached to each arm; with them, he is able to maintain the weight of a car with one attached to the vehicle and the other wrapped around a steel beam, even without his superpower activated. Though more of a showy feature than helpful, the suit has a Good Luck Mode in which the right fist of Wild Tiger's suit increases in size during the last few seconds of the Hundred Power's presence.

- Kotetsu's wristwatch also has a simpler version of a grappling hook installed on it.

Third-Person Sample: The thief raced across the roof, bag of money under his arm, chuckling to himself as Wild Tiger gave chase. Kotetsu had been going after the criminal on foot, scolding him the entire time to stop and drop the cash. The criminal was so put off by the yelling that he got lost in the moment, and tripped over the brick ledge of the building.

"Whoa!" Kotetsu gasped, activating the Hundred Power and increasing his speed to catch up to the thief. He slid on his stomach and reached over the ledge of the building, grabbing the criminal's wrist before the man dropped to his death. "I've got you now! You'll learn that you can't run away from justice and come along quietly!" Kotetsu was pleased with himself; not only had he saved a life, but he'd be able to make the arrest as well.

Unfortunately, he hadn't expected what was going to happen next. The criminal grinned, loosening his hand from inside of his glove. "I won't let you arrest me that easily." The villain laughed, letting himself fall several stories.

"H-hey!" Kotetsu gasped as the suicidal man dropped, but grew even more shocked when Barnaby, outfitted in his super suit, appeared out of seemingly nowhere and scooped up the man after using his Hundred Power to jump and catch him. Wild Tiger's face twisted in shock and surprise when he heard the sound of rapidly spinning propeller blades and the Hero TV announcer's voice. Haha! And Barnaby makes yet another skillful arrest!

"That was my arrest! I had him long before you arrived!" Kotetsu argued and yelled, but with nobody nearby to hear him as he watched the copter glide off. He pulled himself up off the ground and began to walk back to the stairwell as he brushed off his shirt, only to be rejoined by Barnaby after the criminal was in the hands of the police. "Oh, Bunny. There you are. Nice catch."

"Thank you, Kotetsu-san. You didn't have to do that."

"Huh? Didn't have to do what?" Kotetsu blinked.

"You pretended to lose your grip on him so that I could perform the rescue." Barnaby chuckled.

"Eh? Oh. Oh! Y-yeah! Haha. That's right!" Kotetsu chuckled.

"You really know how to lift people's spirits. But next time, you should hang onto him. I'm still plenty of points ahead of you."

"Er, right, right. Next time, he's all mine!" Kotetsu grinned widely, stretching out his arms and crossing them behind his neck. Seeing his partner in good spirits was enough to help him get over his mistake and loss. In the end, the criminal had been apprehended, and that was what was most important.

First-Person Sample: [Kotetsu turns his video feed on, and places the communicator against the wall near the stove, so everybody can see what he's doing. He flashes a big, proud, and somewhat goofy grin.]

Hey! No sense in moping around here, right?

...Huh? Whoa! [Kotetsu laughs, then startles at the pan in front of him, stirring it vigorously a few times. He doesn't want the contents to burn.] There we go! Hehe. That was a close one!

You kids should come down and have something to eat! I make a mean batch of shrimp fried rice, hehe. It's on the house! Well, hehe, the materials were free to begin with. But no charge for me to make it tasty!

[...It should be noted that, after being here a few days, Kotetsu has yet to figure out that the dining room also provides food without the need for cooking.]
