Mother Nature is, indeed, a bitch, and malformed babies are horribly common - and, for good or ill (a bit of both, probably), usually disposed of by the mother in the manner you describe. I've had it happen with guinea pigs and rabbits, and it's most distressing.
I'm glad to hear that the gingers are doing well but that was a lot of drama.
So sorry to hear about your woe - I can well imagine how upsetting that would be to see.
I love the names you've chosen for your two ginger lovelies, especially Chrestomanci!
(Just as an aside - LiveJournal should insert pics for you if you just click 'insert pic' when you create a post. You find your file, click insert, and LJ magically makes it small (but you can click to see bigger) - might be just a paid account thing, though - dunno if you have one of those, or already use this and find it unsatisfactory. I find it much easier than Facebook. Not to pressurise you to change your habits, it's just that I'm pretty much never going to be on Facebook now my step-mother is there, and I will miss hearing about you and the kittens.)

But OMG, the two gingers are utterly adorable! (I'm sure someone will step in as surrogate-subjugator)
