At least with my dad, I was expecting it and it was kind of a relief. Coming home as I do every night and finding Cleo dead is one of the worst things I have experienced. She was fine when I left this morning, fine 2 months ago when she had her yearly checkup, and dead stiff when I walked in the door tonight. More heartbreaking is watching Smoke

It appears she had kidney disease which is not uncommon in older cats. It wasn't bad enough to create any noticeable issues, but may have caused a blood clot.

My thanks to everyone who has offered sympathy; it means a lot to me. Smoke and I have spent the day lying in bed and snuggling. The rain and rather chilly weather makes this easier.
