It WAS a major news item back in 1967, but faded quickly, like a tight lid was clamped down over the story. I was having chow on the mess deck when the TV news bulletin came in. Nobody on board thought it was an accident, some kind of misidentification. Israeli intelligence is world-class, and they just don't make goofs like our intel groups do. I'm sure that their decision to carry out the attack was prompted by their knowing that there was virtually no chance of any serious retaliation from the US. Yes, there was the standard "outrage" voiced by the usual pompous Washington windbags who like to mug for the cameras. It's clear that Israel knew LBJ would only waffle, dance, and blow smoke around the issue.
