I recently enacted a City Ordinance that requires people to control their animals, mostly free roaming dogs. The City hasn't had any control for years and the problem is very serious. I contracted an outside agency to do the work and had hoped that offenders would have just complied ( Read more... )

It's not your fault though, those "people" obviously didn't care about their dogs in the first place. And it is disgusting.

True, it's a tradition here to allow their animals to roam free. Now we are are unique little town, we allow horses and livestock inside City limits, something that many enjoy, as do I, but there are limits, and rules of care in place. The animal control contract will control dogs and all animals inside the City limits as well, that will eventually convince owners to have proper fencing, water, and hay available.
I'm known as a nice guy around these parts, but animal abuse and child abuse is one of my pet peeves, I just don't have any mercy.

Yeah, but I have made a few feel guilty and won their respect. Haven't you seen me on Channel 6 in WF lately? I'm surprised you didn't mention it.

Yes, you are exactly correct. I have heard stories of some residents youth, where the children witnessed the father "thinning the herd" of dogs and cats when he simply hit them on the head to kill them. I think this kind of childhood exposure to a lack of compassion to living creatures is a very negative lesson. It's why some hunters and fishermen who grow up in the country are seen as cruel and uncaring.
The new ordinance is controversial, and I'll get heat over it, but in the end they will have to accept it, not only to treat animals with respect and dignity, but for the public safety as well.
