It had been a quiet couple of months since they all survived the incident with Max. Clay had plastic surgery done on his face and arm for the burns. They weren’t nearly as bad as they first were; but Jensen still called him Scarface, which he didn’t mind too much. Cougar had to do some rehabilitation due to the damage done to his legs. The bullets damaged some of the muscles requiring him to have some serious surgery done. Jensen had been by his side the whole time, along with his sister and niece. Pooch was home with Jolene, who called and ripped all of them a new one for scaring her like that. She threatened to kick all their asses if they thought about doing that again, which they all took very seriously.
They were all ready to ride into the sunset until Jolene came to them with a problem. Her friend borrowed money to pay for her daughter’s tuition from a loan shark. She paid the money back but they kept asking for more and more every month. When she stopped paying they went to her daughter’s college and kidnapped her. No one seemed to be able to help her so Jolene wanted them to help her get her daughter back. Since none of them could ever say no to her before, they took it as their last job before retirement.
After doing some recon on the loan shark, they found out that the shark had a serious criminal trial coming up. They decided that if they got the evidence files from the police they would offer it for the girl. Everything was going according to plan, until the day before they were set to get the information. Somehow; no one was even thinking about asking, Jensen broke his leg. Clay decided that Jensen was a big enough risk to himself when he had two functioning legs. With one broken he was defiantly sitting this one out. He would coach Clay from their safe house. Jensen’s other leg was almost broken when he asked if Clay even knew what a computer was. Smart ass. Cougar should be recommended for sainthood for living with him. They could only imagine what kind of trouble he would get into when left to his own devices.
Despite the minor (or major if you asked Jensen) setback, their plan was going off without a hitch. Jensen had hacked the mainframe to set off alarms to keep the guards away from their intended destination and plug in access codes where they were needed. Clay had managed to get to the computer and started to load all the information onto a drive. They were just about done when Jensen said something about a fire. No one paid him that much attention. The man was loopy when he wasn’t high on pain medication; but drugged he was much worse. It wasn’t until Pooch moved the van to their set location and saw the flames did they take Jensen seriously. Cougar left his post to head back to their safe house as he heard Clay yelling at Jensen to say something only to get no response in return.
All of Cougar’s training went out the window when he reached the house. They did not survive everything they had before only to lose Jensen to a fire. If Jensen was going to burn he was going to fucking burn too. He kicked the door down and called out to Jensen. His heart stopped when he didn’t get a response back. Without a second thought Cougar ran into the burning building. He found Jensen not breathing crumpled on the floor. He looked around for the crutches that should be there but he couldn’t find them. Fucking Pooch. If Jensen died because of a god damn prank…Cougar picked up Jensen and carried him outside.
By the time Cougar got Jensen far enough away from the building and started to perform CPR Clay and Pooch had joined them. He begged Jensen to breathe and he cursed god for making this happen. With every thud against Jensen’s chest he could feel his heart crack. With every breath into Jensen’s unmoving lungs he could feel this soul shrivel up. He didn’t know if he could make it in the world without Jensen. He was almost certain he couldn’t. He heard Pooch yelling at Jensen to wake up, to breathe. He told Jensen Jolene would kick his ass for dying and leaving his kids without their Uncle Jensen. He told Jensen that his family needed him. He told Jensen he had to breathe just for the purpose of getting Pooch back for hiding his crutches.
When Jensen finally took a breath Cougar actually started to cry in relief. Taking a glance at Clay and Pooch he saw he wasn’t the only one. Cougar buried his face in Jensen’s chest and just listened to the sound of Jensen’s heart beating; proof that Jensen was still here, still alive and still with him. Once they were certain Jensen was breathing on his own they got into the van and left before the police and fire department showed up. Cougar didn’t leave Jensen’s side. He concentrated on the moving chest of his lover. Some part of his mind told him that if he kept watching Jensen’s chest it would keep moving and wouldn’t stop.
By the time they got to their new safe house Cougar was shaking. Every emotion he had felt ever since Bolivia hit him all at once. Jensen must have seen it because he made a big show about being tired and asking Cougar to help him to his room. Once the door to their room was closed Jensen kissed him. ‘I’m alive’ he said and kissed him again. ‘You saved me’ he said with another kiss. ‘I am not going anywhere’. By the time Jensen was done Cougar had tears streaming down his face, with Jensen kissing every one away.
The next morning Cougar opened the door of their bedroom to see a box with Pooch’s bobble head on top of it with a little sign hanging from his neck saying ‘sorry’. Cougar smiled softly before taking the box into the room. Prank or not this was going to be fun to watch.
