His favorite time to watch Danny was right when the sun was coming up. The shadows highlighted Danny’s face, making him look younger than he was. Danny always looked so peaceful when he was asleep. He didn’t look like he had the weight of the world on his shoulders; especially now with his brother in the hospital. He was...at peace. It really was a good look on Danny. Some days it really paid to have insomnia. It gave him a chance to see this side of Danny; a side only seen by Mac himself. He ran a few fingers through Danny’s hair and watched the sun come up. Not a bad way to start the day.

It was always dusk when they left the lab for the day. Being a CSI he rarely saw the sun outside of a scene. When he started his shifts the sun hasn’t come up yet; when he ended his shifts the sun has just set. It was almost like having an affair with the sun. He only ever said that out loud to Don, who dismissed it as drunk talking since they were enjoying a few beers while watching a hockey game.

He thought Mac would understand his logic in that; then again it probably wasn’t the best idea to make mention of any kind of affair to the guy you are sleeping with.

Danny was beat. He could feel the ache and tiredness deep in his bones. This case was running him ragged. He couldn’t stop though. Tanglewood had beaten another kid he knew growing up. It brought up so many memories from Louie. Louie had survived his attack. This kid wasn’t so lucky. All he could think about was the promise he made to the parents. He needed to solve this case, and he wouldn’t stop until he did.

Mac had other plans though. He had watched Danny work without rest for three days straight. Mac knew he was being a hypocrite, but he would not let Danny do this to himself.

He would do whatever it took to get Danny to go to their home and get some rest. He would settle for crashing in the lounge if he had to. It didn’t matter. He couldn’t watch Danny destroy himself over his past. It wasn’t Danny that had beaten the boy to death, but Danny held onto the guilt like he did. He knew it was because of Louie. Mac stood up and walked towards Danny.

Danny was going to go home and sleep…even if he had to pull rank or his badge.

When Danny was younger, he loved to catch fireflies. Being in the city, they didn’t come around often. When they did Danny would run into the house to get a mason jar. He always made sure to poke holes in the lid to make sure they didn’t die. Things were so simple back then.

Then Danny got a job working in the lab and saw things he could never dream of. He also started dating Mac, which was better than he ever thought it would be. Now they were retired and living with their adopted daughter in a house on the outskirts of town. Tonight he was watching Mac teach their daughter how to catch fireflies. Mac showed her how to poke holes in the lid and laughed as she ran around catching fireflies with her jar. After Mac helped her with the lid she brought her jar over to Danny to proudly show him her catch.

Danny was a flirt on a regular basis, but when he was drink he was extra flirty. He was everyone’s best friend and everyone in the bar got a come on. Mac was almost certain that was why Stella and Flack always kept the drinks flowing. Stella thought it was cute and Flack wanted to see what he was going to say next.

Danny saved his best lines for when Mac showed up. Not that Danny really needed to use lines on Mac. They had been dating for over three years. It was nice thought. When Danny was sober Mac was the only person he didn’t flirt with, because he didn’t have to.

Danny never got New Years. Why did people celebrate the New Year by getting so drunk they can’t remember it? Sure Danny would occasionally do that but he never understood why. This year...something was different. He felt happy to be celebrating New Years with Mac. It wasn’t just another year they were celebrating. They were celebrating being together.

It hadn’t been easy for them. They both brought a lot of baggage to the relationship. Stella made a joke about them having a matching set. They yelled, bickered, and even thought about breaking up. But after all that they were still together. They were stronger than ever and that was something to celebrate.

Danny smiled as he felt someone slide up next to him. He watched at everyone counted down until midnight. He to a drink from his glass and turned to Mac.

It was going to be a good year.

He wasn’t sure when it happened, but Danny had become the center of his universe. It was Danny’s touch that kept him grounded when a case got to him. It was Danny’s presence that allowed him to sleep at night. Everything revolved around Danny. When it changed from Claire being the center of his universe to Danny, it scared him at first. He thought he was replacing Claire and that was something he never wanted to do. One night he voiced his concern to Danny. To his relief Danny said he didn’t see himself as Claire’s replacement. He was just someone that loved Mac as much as Claire did, and he knew she would always be in Mac’s heart as she should be. Mac felt his universe shift once again.
