It wasn't every day that Aurors got to eat lunch during the lunch hour. In fact, as someone only a year into actual duty, Derek was usually one of the first to be sent out at whatever hours they needed someone out there. There were definite downsides, he'd discovered, to being on the bottom of seniority and being good at what you did. It meant you were likely to be sent out for anything at any time- worse because they trusted you to be able to handle whatever came around. Today though, today had been pleasantly quiet and Derek was looking forward to getting home at a normal hour and being able to play with Abby.
The young parent thing hadn't- as one might expect- exactly helped his schedule.
Looking forward to a little downtime before the afternoon of research or field work, Derek jumped into line and started gathering his food.
Ruth Ann was happily humming to herself as the line slowly progressed forward, paying little mind to the Auror that had just stepped into place behind her. She was going to get lunch at lunch time today! What a rarity! Never mind the fact that she was actually able to leave the office for lunch was rarer still (which meant that today she would not have to eat the Kaiser's lunch to keep from starving and to teach the fluffy-brained twit a lesson - he was a good boss, just not terribly bright sometimes). Eating at lunchtime meant that there was actual food to be had in the cafeteria! Of a food-like nature, rather than the three-Galleon sandwiches on dried out bread that you had to make do with the rest of the day.
A look of pure glee suffused her face as she took in the bountiful buffet before her. Today was a beautiful day indeed!
The food definitely looked better at lunch than the middle of the morning/halfway through the afternoon 'sorry but you get the leftovers' meals Derek usually caught and he perked up a bit, trying to get a better look through the queue by raising onto the balls of his feet. Unfortunately, doing so made him bump into the young woman in front of him.
"Oh!" Smooth, Bly. "Sorry," he said quickly. He flashed an apologetic smile to cover his embarrassment and then realized he knew the girl. "Hey, Ruth Ann, isn't it? Didn't know you were working here."
Well, to be honest it was possible he'd heard something about it at some point but if Derek had it wasn't exactly the first thing on his mind.
Grabbing the rail for the trays, Ruth Ann just barely managed to avoid stumbling and causing mass chaos in the cafeteria as she usually did. Hearing her name, she glanced around and grinned. "It's... Derek, right? I didn't know you were here either. Not surprising though, really. They don't let me out of the dungeons to mingle with the other peons very often." Her hand shot out and she deftly captured a plate of lasagna for her tray before shuffling along.
"What are you in for, then? Misuse of Muggle Artifacts? Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures? Oh, I know! Must be Magical Games and Sports, yeah?" she said brightly, remembering how gung-ho the man had been about Quidditch back in school.
Derek grinned. "I'm sure you could." Polishing off the last of his shepard's pie, he pushed the plate away and leaned back a bit in the plastic cafeteria chair. "The question is, should I expect to survive going through it once you're done? Don't want to wipe out a whole group of Aurors, mind you. We're hard to come by."
Swallowing, Ruth Ann rolled her eyes. "Well, it's no fun if no one survives," she said in a tone of voice that made it very clear that this should be obvious to anyone. "And Unspeakables have to go through training too, only don't ask me what kind because I don't know, but anyway, they're hard to come by too."
"Mm." Derek nodded as he took a drink. "I suppose they are. Unless they just grow them down there. They can probably do that, you know," he invented wildly. He'd never known anyone personally that was recruited to work in Mysteries. They could just pop out of nowhere.
Maybe Derek should be an Unspeakable. He could make up crazy stories about what he did and pretend it was the truth. Then again, he was pretty fond of what he did now and he didn't have to lie to people about it. Much. There was the whole trouble with Gabe but never mind that. It would work out. Somehow. Derek wasn't sure how but he'd figure it out eventually.
"How did you get into working down there, if you don't mind my asking? Do they all sorts of restrictions on where you can go and what you can touch?"
Grow them down there? Hmm... Ruth Ann considered this briefly. "Well, they certainly have enough brains that they could grow their own," she muttered thoughtfully. Though she probably wasn't supposed to talk about that outside of the office... Oops. Oh well, too late.
"Well, I... asked at the career fair?" Ruth Ann said tentatively. "And I filled out some paperwork... and, well. I got an internship? I was thinking of doing an Ashworth internship, since they would've given me free art supplies and stuff, but then I thought I might try something a little different first. And I get to work with books this way! I like books." She grinned happily. "I get to touch a lot of stuff, 'cause I'm the one who knows where the books are that identify the different things they bring in, and they sometimes ask me to keep track of the files that say where everything is, but I'm not supposed to go into some of the rooms." Not that she listened to that too much...
