Appearance:

Personality: Sam is the perfect counter to his brother’s rather blunt attitude. He’s more in tune with how people are feeling and will react accordingly. This leads to no end of ragging from his brother, but as he’s grown up with it, Sam just shakes off the jokes made at his expense. He’s very genuine and cares about those close to him. Sometimes that attitude will lead to Sam asking concerned questions like “are you all right?” to someone who is very evidently not.

He’s also a deeply angry man. Angry at the demon who interfered in his life, killed his mother and later his girlfriend and angry at the situations that keep pushing him and his brother into dangerous situations. For the most part, Sam keeps his anger under control, but it’s been known to explode to the surface with a temper that manages to rival his brother’s.

He also has a deep sense of responsibility. If he screwed something up, Sam will move heaven and earth, and at times risk his own life, to try and set things right again. While his determination to make things right can be admirable, the single-mindness that sometimes drives him can sometimes put both himself and others at risk.

He also has something of an addictive, self-destructive personality that he struggles with. Over the course of a summer, Sam was addicted to demon blood and the power that it gave him. While he’s overcome the addiction and remains clean, he still fights to remain on a straight path and not slip back into those old patterns again. He relies heavily on Dean for this, probably more than he should.

Powers/Abilities: When Sam was six months old, he was fed demon blood. This didn’t mean anything until he turned 22 and he started to manifest strange abilities. Sam started to have visions of people dying, which were all the handiwork of the demon that had fed him the blood in the first place. As his abilities progressed, he learned that with a fresh infusion of blood, he could forcibly exorcise demons from the bodies they possessed. He also became at least marginally telekinetic. The downside of this ability is that he became deeply addicted to demon blood.

Sam has since gone clean and while he remains firmly off the demon blood, his abilities lie dormant.

He was also raised as a hunter, which means he’s highly skilled in combat (armed and unarmed), impersonating police and federal agents, interrogation, breaking and entering, setting traps and hacking into computer systems when needed. He’s also proficient enough in Enochian magic to recognize certain wards and draw a strong Devil’s Trap that would keep a demon prisoner.

History: Sam was born in Lawrence Kansas in 1983 to Mary and John Winchester, and his elder brother Dean. At the age of six months, a demon named Azazel entered his room and fed the infant Sam demon blood. That night, his mother was also killed in a fire that consumed his nursery and most of the house he and his family lived in.

From that moment on, his father John dedicated his life to tracking down the demon that killed Mary. Sam and Dean were raised on the road, and in the world of the demon hunter. While other kids played soccer and told ghost stories, they were loading shotgun shells with rock salt, making silver bullets and learning how to form basic Enochian wards against demons. Dean embraced the life of a hunter from the very beginning, but Sam found himself longing for something more normal. A life that didn’t revolve around monsters, magic and a never-ending battle. He just wanted a normal, average sort of life.

Fast-forward about twenty-two years. Sam, after an epic argument with his father, walked away from his family. He graduated high school and started attending Stanford with the intention of entering law school. Sam had cut ties with both his father and his brother, never expecting to hear from them again, until Dean broke into the apartment he shared with his girlfriend Jess.

Talked into one more hunt, Sam took off with Dean to try and track their Dad down after he had gone missing. He returned home in time to see Jess die in the same manner that his mother had been killed in. After Jess’s funeral, Sam hit the road with his brother, intent on revenge against the demon that had destroyed his life and any dream of normality he had.

While hunting with Dean, he began to manifest certain abilities, visions, the occasional burst of telekinetic power, and the ability to pull demons from the mortals they possessed. This caused no end of tension and confrontation between the brothers, and Dean had good cause to worry.

To resurrect Sam after his murder, Dean made a deal with a crossroads demon. In return for his brother’s life, he got one more year of his own before his soul was damned to Hell. When Sam failed (in his mind) to save his brother from Hell, he went pretty much off the rails. He became reckless and lived on nothing but his rage. That temperament made him perfect to be manipulated by the demon Ruby, and later even the angels, into breaking the final seal that set Lucifer free and started the Apocalypse.

Finally free of his addiction, Sam set out with his brother, Bobby and Castiel to try and avert the end of the world. He realized the level of mistake he had made, and was driven to do anything to correct it. There was no way he could apologize for what he had done; there was only trying to atone for it.

His final atonement was to allow Lucifer to possess him, to become the living vessel of the devil himself. Thanks to that trademark Winchester stubbornness, he was able to overcome Lucifer long enough to reopen the cage that bound Lucifer and jump in. He wasn’t able to do it before he was forced to kill his dear friends Bobby Singer and Castiel and nearly beat his brother to death, but at the final moment, he was able to wrestle control back and jump.

Sam returned, thanks to the intervention of Castiel that rescued his body from the Cage. The angel failed to retrieve Sam’s soul and he spent a year as the victim of two deeply furious archangels. That year left his soul scarred, raw and beyond repair. His soul had been retrieved by Death and because he liked Dean, Death agreed to put up a wall in Sam’s mind, one that would keep his time in Hell from his conscious memory.

The wall held until Castiel tore it down in an attempt to divert the brothers from trying to stop him in his bid to open Purgatory and swallow enough souls to stop Raphael.

Sam is now trying to resolve the memories and hallucinations of hell with what he sees in the waking world. It’s difficult and he can often be seen rubbing the large scar on his hand in an attempt to keep himself grounded and focused on the world that was real.

Journal sample: [The camera sits at an odd angle, Sam doesn’t even remember keying it on. He’s sitting on the floor, knees drawn up close to his chest, pinching the bridge of his nose. His mind is quiet, the burning blazing sensation of Lucifer is gone and for a long moment, all he can do is sit and collect his fractured memories]

Hn. Dean.. Dean I tried. I tried to stop him before he got to Cas. Or to Bobby. I don’t know if you can hear me, but I tried.

[Sam fumbles for the device at his feet, his expression agonized] I don’t think this is Hell, so if anyone can hear me, find Dean? Please. Tell my brother that I’m okay. He should go to Lisa and live his life. He deserves that much.

Prose sample: Run the patch down the bore.
Clean the receiver and trigger assembly.
Reassemble.
Firing pin, slide, barrel.
Wipe it down and check the sights.
Reload.

It was almost a form of moving meditation for Sam. He had learned how to field strip and clean a weapon at an early age. If he had trouble sleeping after a hunt, he would break down their guns at least twice and clean them while Dean snored blissfully on in the hotel room. He envied his brother’s ability to shake off what they saw on a hunt sometimes. It didn’t matter what kind of horror it was; after a few post-hunt burgers and beers, Dean would pass right out.

He had lost count of how many times he had cleaned this gun over the last few days, since he woke up and realized that he wasn’t falling into Hell. Tonight, it was least three times since he woke up in a cold sweat. A bottle of whiskey sat at his elbow. Between cleanings, he would pause and take a short swallow.

He wasn’t strong; not like Dean, and not like their father.
When he closed his eyes, he could see them die. First Castiel, who had proven himself a good ally and a damn good friend. The hardest was Bobby, who had become a surrogate father for him and Dean. Even in his dreams, Sam could hear Dean’s bones shattering beneath his fists, even while his brother called his name. Every night it was the same dream and the same failed chances to save those he loved.

Sam was tired. He was so tired. But when he slept, it happened all over again.

So he sat, cleaning the gun. He sat and drank and waited for the sun to come up.
