I've had a lot of discussions (mostly with guys as they make up 90% of my friend base) over why they started dating a girl in the first place, and they almost unfailingly mention that they really liked all of the interests they had in common with a girl.  A lot of guys seemed to be obsessed with finding girls that share their love of video games or ( Read more... )

In the long term, I think it's great to have lots of common interests. Past the point where you can find out what they like to do and when the initial excitement of a relationship has worn off, it's just nice to be able to do things and talk about things together that you naturally enjoy. I will occasionally do things like play Magic the Gathering to appease Chris, and he will sometimes come to see my dance performances. But we enjoy being together most when we do something that both of us like ( ... )

It's finding the balance between having nothing in common and everything in common.

What I personally encounter a lot is where both have the same general interests but like different subdivisions of that interest. You still have enough in common to relate to each other, but your preferences are still different enough for you to share tastes, learn more about what you like or don't like, and generate conversation/debates.
