First debate!

Well, i am at my first debate tournament and got out of my first round. It was interesting. We lost, for sure, but that is to be expected. It was my first round, my teammate had never run Leader of Opposition before, and the team we were against were varsity. BUT! I did not freeze up and totally fail. Another round soon. :O ( Read more... )

So, I watched one of the videos on the website you linked (a round involving a case to close "Harvey Milk school" due to the government team's assertion that it presented dangerous potential for a self-initiated segregation that winds up snowballing) and it looked really awesome! So then I wound up reading some information about it and... wow, yeah, parliamentary definitely seems like an enjoyable, rational form of debate overall. Definitely way more realistic and reasonable that policy was, lol. (In a general wiki article about various forms of debate, policy was actually compared to parliamentary: "In comparison to parliamentary debate, policy debate relies more on researched evidence and tends to have a larger sphere of what is considered legitimate argument, including counterplans, critical theory, and debate about the theoretical standards of the activity itself. OH TITS. John Hopkins has a Parliamentary team!!! I wanna do it! Apparently you have to try out - I think I could totally make it in, but I'm not sure whether or not I would be allowed to participate. I wonder if having the ability to take Hopkins classes kind-of-sort-of makes me a JHU student by proxy or not at all? I should ask... apparently they pick their team members in the fall only. So August 2009 maybe I could try? Ahhh that would be exciting! Just thinking about debate puts a fire in my belly.

I can ask them tomorrow during rounds 4 and 5. I doubt THEY would care, but their school might. Yeah, I can ask.

I just asked someone on my team, and he said as long as you are enrolled in one Hopkins class you can probably be on the team, but it probably won't matter if you aren't.

Yeah, I'll ask.

I probably lost all three rounds, but I have definitely been getting better each one! AND I have not frozen up! Yay!
