As for LOTR, I am not into that fandom. In fact, I may be one of the few people around who've never seen the movies. Tried to watch the first one, just didn't grab my interest. But I can appreciate the frustration of bad fic and research, believe me!
I can't claim to have all my facts straight when I write, but I do try to at least seem like I know something. *g* And not fly off on a whim and make things up as I go along.
I have found recently though, through Stargate fic, an interesting discovery. The whole debate of what is canon vs fanon. Never saw this much in ER. But in SG it's a major issue. And if you read enough fic, the lines start to blur between what actually happened on the show and what you think you remember happening. lol!
Now that I've slapped my own little bitch rant onto yours, I'll return you to your regularly scheduled rant... :-)
The problems with some of LOTR fic isn't that the fics are bad. Most of them that I'm referring to are pretty damn good -- EXCEPT for the tendency of the writer's to mess things up by using phrases that Tolkien never would have used, or not getting their facts right.
I know we don't yet have much fanon going on with "ER", but I had to smile over that because my old boss (who is also an "ER" fan and a big fan of my fanfic) used to have the problem of not being able to remember if something was from the show or from a fanfic *vbg*.
