I don't think we're in Melbourne anymore, Toto...

Hello hello. I'm typing this from the crappy apartment in Harlem, New York, in which I will be stuck for the next 48 hours as a freaking hurricane rages along the east coast of the US.

Hurricanes are not quite what I expected from the US branch of my study abroad year. Broadway shows? Yes. Obesity? Yes. Natural disasters? Not so much. But hey. I ( Read more... )

Stay safe, dear! And I'm glad you got to the USA!

The US is amazing! Well, I can only really vouch for this coast, but everyone's lovely, and everything is CHEAP, and aside from some minor weather details, it's been incredibly fun and troublefree. :) x

Oh man, what are you doing in Harlem of all places? :)

Ah, I missed you in your travels up the coast! :( Maybe on your way home? But I'm so happy you loved Washington DC; I love that city so much. I'm well overdue for another visit.

Windows should probably be okay...as long as nothing flies into them. Oh, I forgot to say in my other comment - prepare to be really hot when the power goes out. So: shower, shave :), have light sources, food and water, and things to pass the time. You should be okay, it's just nerve wracking until it's over. Good luck! ♥

Thanks so much for the advice! Especially about not going outside and power outages. Are hurricanes the ones where you're meant to stand under doorways or sit in baths? We've only got a shower between the three of us, but I'm hoping it'll just seem like a big storm from inside the building.

We're in Harlem for the cheapness, mainly. :) And I had no idea you lived on the east coast! Virginia, is it? We were in Virginia for a couple of hours (Arlington Cemetery :p). I'm actually incredibly bummed that I missed the chance to meet you!

Best of luck to you as well - this is really no fun for anyone. (And so soon after the - admittedly harmless - earthquake?) Let's buckle down - see you on the other side, safe and dry and shaved! XD x

Earthquakes are the ones where they want you to get in doorways or under desks, tornadoes they want you to get somewhere with no windows - often in the tub in the bathroom is a good option, if there are no windows. I'm not sure if the earthquakes thing is the smartest thing to do, though - Tuesday was my first experience with one ( ... )

Sounds like it's been fun so far. Stay safe! And hey, living through Irene will be something you can tell your grandkids about.

:D

I don't think I'll have much to tell them after all! Just got up (10am), and there's no rain, no winds, nothing. Didn't wake up during the night with noise, either. We've still got a few hours to go, but luckily it all seems to have been much less dramatic than meteorologists were expecting. :) x
