Advice needed.

If anyone's ever been homesick before - irrational tears, unexpected panic attacks, basically acting like a mad person - please tell me how you dealt with it. How you got over it. How you worked through it. Because I may be in London, and it may be living up to my every wild expectation, but I can't completely enjoy it while I'm having a miniature ( Read more... )

Oh dear, I'm so sorry. I can't say I've ever been homesick (always happy to be away, is me), so I just offer intercontinental hugs. It sucks terribly now, but it has to pass.

I gratefully accept and return your intercontinental hugs. :) Thanks so much for the support. It truly helped.

Sorry to hear about the homesickness, bb. The only intense homesickness I felt was when I was in Japan, but that was only for a two week stay so it was pretty short lived. What I did try to do was focus on the experiences I was having and knowing that my family was only an email away. I know that's not much help, but maybe focusing less on what you left and more on the limited time you have to experience London would work? And maybe sharing your day-to-day travels with your family like you would normally do in the States would provide some familiar comfort? I hope that helps. ><

You have no idea how much that helped. Just knowing I'm not alone in feeling that way was a massive help. And you're so right - for the past couple of days, if I start getting all depressed again, I just glance out a window and remind myself just where the hell I am. Because even if my family's not here, I'm in London, for goodness sake. So now I'm trying to seize the day, all cliches aside. And it's working!

I think the only thing you can do is just wait for it to go away. Get out, try to have fun, and you'll eventually feel more comfortable.

Guess what? Yeah, you were totally right. XD Thanks so much for the advice. It really helped while I was stuck at that awful low point. x

Thanks so much. You're absolutely right, of course. I've been feeling progressively better over the past couple of days, largely because of the fact that I'm collecting awesome people, day by day. :)

I've never been homesick but I am very used to London-induced panic ( ... )

Thank you so much. You have no idea how much this helped. For one thing, it's enormously comforting to know I'm not alone in feeling this way. I'm taking the night off tonight, just sitting down, catching up with emails and watching some doctor who. I've been feeling a bit better for a couple of days; your 'step at a time' approach is dead on.

So thanks. :) Seriously.
