What's the best local nursery? I really want to get some roses and fruit trees (would like to try and switch over to a more edible landscape plan), but I'm new and don't really know what will do well here.
TYIA! :-)

We had apple, pear and peach trees growing up just north of Huntsville in Fayetteville and they all did well (until the horses killed the peach trees!) I can't help with a nursery name right now since I've moved way north but I'll ask my grandmother as she knows pretty much all of them though :)

Pretty sure we attempted cherry trees but I can't remember if they didn't grow because they couldn't or if something got them (again, our horses were terrors :P)

The apple orchard still grows great apples and we haven't even done anything with it in ten years other than let it sit there.

Ok, good to know! :-) You don't happen to know the varieties of apples?
For future reference, cherry leaves and the pits of the fruit are toxic to horses.

It's been so long ago (20 years... I was between 8-10 when we planted those) I really don't remember if the horses killed the cherry trees or not. Pretty sure they were in the yard and not the barnyard though.

Unfortunately I don't know the types of apples other than I know we had a few granny smiths but mostly just some sort of yummy red apples. The orchards were there when my parents bought the farm though. 200 plus trees.

I keep forgetting that this comm has screening for links. *sigh*

Bennett Nurseries on North Memorial Parkway (just past Winchester Rd./AL A&M) is probably one of the more varied/larger nurseries in town. I'm pretty sure they have trees, as well, although I don't know what their fruit tree selection is like. (*checks their website*) They say they have "peach trees, pear trees, apple trees, plum trees and fig trees". My grandmother had a fig tree (it was more like a really large/tall bush than a tree, though) and it seemed to always do well.

There are certainly other places in town (IIRC, you're in SE HSV?), but I'm not as familiar with what their selection is like.

Well, I'm usually going up to that end of town, so I'll be sure to check them out! :-)

And if you're interested in water gardening, Across the Pond is right next door to Bennett's.

Since you seem to be interested in growing apples, here's a page for a local orchard (Scott's) and all the varieties they have available (I think all of these are grown on-site). Looks like most of the common apple varieties can be grown here, although don't quote me on that.

Bennett's will only have recommended-for-this-area plants for sale, most likely. Also, their staff is usually happy to answer questions.
