well, there are spot colors and process colors. spot colors are premixed and process is achieved through, for example, printing offset with CMYK.
pantone comes in by offering spot colors (identified through PMS numbers) & formulas that printers can match quite consistently. so, for my use specifically, the shirts i print all use spot colors and because each monitor displays colors differently, i need this color book to find the correct colors i want for my design... and by offering the printer the PMS number, they can match it precisely.
