Getting there... Assisi towel

Nov 04, 2009 11:13

I have been working on this assis/reversa towel for some time now. It's been a good project, because it has been very portable. I actually quite like doing counted-style embroidery, I find that it's an easier style than free-form, or at least takes a little less concentration.

So, I have finished one end of the towel...

Here it is before washing and ironing:

I don't quite know how parts of the linen got to be so filthy. Needless to say, when I washed it, the dirt didn't all come out, but some of the red dye did. Of course. I will hit it with a bit of Run Away or something to see if that helps.

Here it is washed and partially hemmed. I also pulled the warp threads from the end (the linen follows the weft from selvage to selvage. Not ideal, but it was a better use of the fabric I had), to form a fringe, and knotted it, partially to make it look pretty, and partially to make sure it wouldn't fray any further.

I have started another row of embroidery at the other end, but I woosed out massively on doing a matching band. This one takes elements from the main band and repeats them, but is much narrower, and therefore less likely to drive me to an early grave (or a psych ward!).

One of these days I will actually finish it, and then I won't be able to watch telly, without fidgetting, until I start a new one.
