After that, someone whistles what sounds like the acknowledging warble a computer might make. After that is a long, tense pause, followed by a grunt. The audio flicks off, but typing starts after a few more moments. ]

Why are you making that irritating... whistling noise?

[ Pause. ]

Checking something.

Why?

I see no point. Whatever you're "checking" probably isn't here with you. And like I said, it's irritating.

Figured that out. Thanks for the tip. It means I have no reason to try again, either.

[ While he doesn't have his end of the audio turned on, he snorts in amusement. ]

Sounds like someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed.

So, let me just sum this up. I'm in the middle of no where, on a

[ Short pause ]

an ocean liner, on God only knows what planet, with a bunch of people from God only knows where?

Fantastic.

Elegante, apparently.

If there is a way off, no one has discovered it.

Strange name for a ship.

Well. Damn it.

You are on an oceanfaring ship that is not actually a ship on an ocean planet that may not be a planet at all, on your way to a place called the Golden Shore.

At least you realized fairly easily that you are no longer on your "dirt" planet. Most roundears do not catch on so quickly.

[Does he sound impressed? No, not really. Maybe a very, very little. But that's better than most people get!]

Are we sure the 'Golden Shore' is even a shore?

[ This is becoming rather a lot to process all at once. The one thing that he's managed so far is 'No one here is trying to kill me'. ]

And I'm guessing that you have pointed ears or something?

No one but the Captain and crew are really certain of anything.

[And now he does sound impressed, although only moderately so.]

Makers, someone figured it out all by themselves. You must be an inspiration to your species.

This is so typical.

[ He turns on his comm line long enough to bark a laugh. ]

I'm just good at figuring things out.

So just a typical day?

Sounds like you've had a pretty bad one, ma'am.

Do your days consist of consecutively being on a boat and making friends, only to have 'em just ripped away? Then yeah, typical day.

You could say that.

[ That's... way too similar to his normal life. Really. He shifts, pausing for a long while before continuing to type. ]

You could say that.

Well, sorry to hear that.
