I really wish Mom would stop drinking wine until her speech starts to slur. Every time that happens, we go out to eat, and every time she humiliates me in public.

I think I know what you're probably thinking. "Perfect Dark, underrated? What is he thinking?" And yes, I acknowledge that Perfect Dark is rather fondly remembered.

However, when I say the phrase "first-person shooter from the N64/PS1/Saturn era," what's the first game you think of? I'm willing to bet it's this game. Which is a fantastic game, and I'm actually looking forward to the remake on the Wii. It deserves its praise, because it really was influential and innovative for its time.

That said, though, Perfect Dark did just about everything Goldeneye did, and there were several things it just did better. For starters, every single gun had a primary mode and a secondary mode. Some of the most memorable are the Laptop Gun being deployable as a sentry gun, the Farsight XR-20's ability to locate enemy players regardless of where they were on the map, and the Slayer's fly-by-wire rockets. Even your bare hands had two modes -- attack and disarm. You also had customizable weapons setups -- no more were you restricted to set weapons lists like pistols, power weapons, and one specific kind of mines. You also had AI-controlled enemies, so you and three friends could play cooperatively instead of against each other. And let's not forget the two-player co-op in the main game.

Yet despite all the things that Perfect Dark does better than its spiritual predecessor, it sold only just enough to land into the Player's Choice library. Maybe people didn't want to shell out the money for the Expansion Pak to get the most out of the game. Maybe it was the higher rating. Maybe it just was released too late in the N64's life. Whatever the problem was, sales were hurt. Also, Perfect Dark had the misfortune of being the game that improves upon a formula that was already innovative, and thus people remember the more innovative game more fondly than the improved game. But for whatever reason, Perfect Dark always has been and always will be stuck in Goldeneye's shadow.
