I just love Jess and Lester's bond and Becker being comforting is a must <3 Bonus points if Lester wakes up to them kissing and has something sarcastic to say about it! xD” by honestlysweet

She was shaking. With the future predators anywhere in the ARC she tried not to breathe to loudly, any tiny thing could alert them to her presence. With Lester lying against her she didn’t want to risk another attack. She was already covered in blood that wasn’t hers. “We’ll be okay.” She said in barely more than a whisper. “They’ll get here. We’ll be okay.” She continued with the only EMD in the building in her hand, her other applying pressure to her bosses bitten middle.

When she heard the clatter of feet she didn’t know whether to be terrified or relieved. She gripped onto the EMD tighter than she ever should have. She would never shoot anything this tense.

With the other presence in the room closing on her she acted, aiming the EMD in the direction of the noise. She’d never been more pleased to see her captain clad in black. She could barely concentrate enough to register the warmth of is hand on her face or to focus on his face as he told her she was safe.

Once they were secure, the future predators beaten, Jess didn’t want to stay in the Hub. She had somewhere else to be whilst the team were in the field saving the day. She couldn’t leave Lester without somebody he trusted by his side. He had positioned himself between her and the predator, the least he deserved was to be watched over whilst he recovered. If he was recovering.

She didn’t know how long she watched him before she felt a firm yet friendly hand on her shoulder, “How’s he doing?”

“Not good. The medics don’t know if he’ll make it. Only time will tell, if he makes it through the next twenty-four hours they say he’ll stand a better chance.”

“And if he doesn’t?”

“Doesn’t bear thinking about.” The floodgates opened then, she couldn’t stop them, tears running down her cheeks, her breath catching in her throat, her shoulders shaking with her sobs.

“Hey, hey,” Becker attempted to comfort her, he pulled her into him, allowing her to cry into his shoulder, “This is Lester you’re talking about. No Future Predator would be able to stop him.” He said into her hair, rubbing a comforting hand over the top of her arm, “It’ll be okay, Jess, he’ll be okay.”

“You don’t know that.”

“Yes, Jessica, I do. They know what they’re doing.”

Her hands were shaking, the movement was adamant in Becker’s vision; he slipped his hand around hers. She tried to smile at him but after a brief moment the corners of her mouth fell again. With one hand still holding hers Becker slipped his other arm around her shoulders. Wordlessly she leant against him, crying into his chest.

Her sobs had subsided after an hour.

With a day like the ones they had just survived behind them, they air had been looking forward to kicking back, relaxing. But they both knew, perhaps Jess a little more so than the captain, that they weren’t going to be relaxing until she was certain her boss was out of the woods.

Becker had his head rested atop Jess’, tracing absent circles on her arm.

She turned her head to face her comforter, “What if he doesn’t make it?”

“He will.”

“He’s like a father to me,” Becker had read her file; seen that her father had died when she was just four years old. He’d not been blind to the honesty of their relationship, he treated Jess better than he did the rest of the team. They didn’t mind it, not in the slightest. Everybody gravitated towards Jess, she radiated kindness. It was only natural that Lester would seek to protect her, the youngest member of the team, the same age as his eldest daughter. He was easier on her, helpful, less mean in his sarcastic comments towards her. When Becker had found the pair of them the second Jess had told him how Lester had put himself between her and the predator Becker hadn’t been surprised. James Lester put his neck on the line for his team every day, his fondness rarely shown but always present, especially for the field co-ordinator.

“He’d doing fine, Jess, trust me. The medics insist he’s going to make it. It wasn’t as bad as it looked.”

“How can you be so sure?”

“Because.”

“Because it’s a reason. It’s a cheap way out.”

“He’s breathing on his own, the bleeding has stopped. His body is just tired; he’ll wake when it wants him to wake.” His reasoning seemed to sate her, she nodded silently. “Get some sleep,” he said, proffering a peck to her forehead in comfort.

“I can’t. Not until I know he’s okay.”

“He’d appreciate it,” he replied looking deeply into her big blue eyes, “But he’d appreciate it more if you didn’t deprive yourself of sleep for him.” A small smile presented itself on Jess’ lips and something in Becker couldn’t stop himself. He pressed his lips to hers in a brief peck. It stunned her, her jaw dropping.

“He’d appreciate it more if you found a room that wasn’t his,” a voice wheezed beside them.

“Lester!” Jess jumped from her seat, a full beam on her face, “You’re okay.”

“So it would seem. I feel like I got ripped apart by a Future predator.”

“You did.” Jess replied, hugging Lester around his head.

He choked on her hair but tried to raise his hand to hug her in return only to feel immense pain for his troubles, “That would be why.”

“You shouldn’t have risked yourself for me, Lester.”

“Enough, go home, Jess. Go to sleep.”

“Once the medics say you’re okay. Then I’ll go.”

“Becker?” Lester implored but the soldier merely held up his hands in defeat, he knew it was pointless to try and argue with an adamant Jess.
