Yesterday morning, I got an email from a farm in Wisconsin that's big enough to make use of me. They want me in, they say we'll discuss details in a couple weeks. YAY no impending joblessness

There are a few awesome places to study/work in that field, right? Somewhere in the midwest--is it Illinois? Around here, I imagine that Chico, SLO, and Davis are "blooming", so to speak.
I have yet to map the various bio-D epicenters, but University of New Hampshire seems to be one.
The various soy-to-diesel initiatives I can't take seriously, it's basically more make-work market outlet BS for farmers. Soy ~= 60 gallons/acre, rapeseed ~= 200 G/Ac, algae has been pegged at 15 000 G/Ac in theory but closer to 5 000 in practical application.

"And the more I learn about biodiesel, the more apparent it is to me that it should be based on an algae reactor technology and not on oil crops."
Amen! Soybeans, corn...it's all just another form of subsidizing when you get right down to most of the ideas for "biofuel" in the US. And I don't even want to get started on what it takes to *get* a bushel of corn versus the same amount of algae.... Now off to read your latest link above...

you are posting from an IP address in Indianapolis, and you said -uhm-. this makes me think you are lilmizscareall ?
In all likelihood I will end up in Viroqua, WI by spring. What happens in the interim is not yet known, it seems likely that this will be a Winter of Travelling. Ithaca, Portland, St. Louis, and LA all beckon gently.

It seems there are only 4 species for which the genome has actually been characterized.
