For All the Girls They Loved Before

Jack seemed to really like Hugh Fitzcairn. The man had stories that nearly rivaled Jack’s. It was nice to pass time in a quiet pub with a good companion for the day, and into the night. Heck, Jack had nowhere to go, the Decastrian ship wasn’t landing until the next morning. He just had to get them to leave quietly and no human would know aliens had been sightseeing in Aberystwyth.

Suddenly, a mean looking bloke stormed into the pub. He glanced around then headed straight for Jack and Hugh. Jack tensed up as the burly man who looked like a docker dove at their table, brandishing a pocketknife.

“Stay away from me wife!” His eyes flashed.

Jack wondered which of them was being yelled at when the man grabbed Hugh. Hugh fell back out of the chair, grabbing his arm. Jack bolted forward, disarming the brute. The barkeep and Jack hauled the man out the door of the pub and threw him into the street.

Hurrying back to check on Hugh, Jack saw that the older looking man had a handkerchief tied around his arm.

“Let’s get you to the hospital,” Jack said.

“Don’t worry about me laddie. It takes more than a jealous husband to get rid of me,” Hugh responded, grabbing up his long coat. “Besides, I know a pretty, perky little girl who will love to play nursemaid for me.” Hugh winked at Jack and flashed a naughty grin as he hurried out the back door of the pub.

Jack just shook his head, and then realized that in his hurried exit, Hugh had failed to leave any coin to pay for his afternoon of drinking and tall tales. Jack sighed and pulled out a couple of bills form his wallet, tossing them on the table as he left.
