A older man stopped his pickup in front of my house. He gets out, kicks some debris, and gets back in the truck. He drives about twenty feet more, gets out, and picks up a aluminum can from my forested yard. He takes the can, pours out whatever was left in it, and throws it in the back of his truck. He used more $$$ in gas in the 40 or so feet of stops and starts than the single can he found will net him...

Yup, and as I walked around in the yard, he missed like 3 more cans.

I knew a guy who would occasionally do this riding his bike, where the expense of gas wasn't involved.

I've seen ppl raid recycling bins during pickup days, arriving ahead of the garbage truck and selectively targeting aluminum cans. Here I could see the volume making a truck worthwhile.

Yup, people have raided our recycle bin for returnable cans too. This guy was just picking from the woods.
