I worked as a receptionist one summer, and it's quite nice at times. I too enjoy the idea of smiling, helping, and answering phones! I think it works well as a short-time job.
Some places, as blockerhershot mentioned, ARE really busy though!!! I was lucky that the place I was at was pretty slow... but then it does get boring at times.
Good luck with everything, whatever decision you make. :) And if you're looking for a receptionist position, then you should try a temp agency. That's how I got my receptionist job, and I know that's how my other friend got many different receptionist jobs. They often start out as temp and keep you for longer if you work out. :)

i'm thinking of applying for a few reception jobs this summer break - when uni finishes for the year and see how it all goes. mainly i'm just looking for a part-time job to complement my university studies for the next two years!

i'd just like to be doing anything rather than stressing about papers and exams which always come down like a bomb on me and i have to rush trying to finish them off.
a 9-5 job feels so much more secure, money in the purse, nothing to worry about past work and the leisure of spending the evenings reading or going out for films and coffee with friends and weekends shopping!

But it is nice being a receptionist, in the fact that you hardly have responsibilities and get to dress nice. BUT the pay is crap, and sometimes you get treated worse than people who work in fast food.
